Stage 3: Impact in proposals

After defining the desired impact, investigating the problem, collecting stakeholders, creating your core consortium and formalizing how you think you will be able to create impact, the final steps will involve the proposal writing itself. We advise you to wait with actual writing until your story is clear (preferably on paper and shared with your consortium and stakeholders (See step 4)). You will notice that the actual writing down is easier if the foundations of the story are well defined. If you get stuck during the writing, you probably need to go back to the earlier steps and reconsider the impact, the problem, and the stakeholders.

For each grant, whether it is EU or NL, if you are asked to create impact is important that your goals to reach impact are visible in all sections of your proposal. The research idea formulated and designed experiments originated from the type of impact you are making. That is why the time spent on impact is so crucial. A good description of your impacts requires clear definitions of input, output, outcome and impact – but be aware, that EU and NWO have slightly different definitions, which you can find below.

Definitions:

Different funders have slightly different templates, therefore the section below is split for the UT’s most targeted research funders: NWO and the EU. If you are applying to a different funder, the template might be different but remember that they usually ask for more or less the same information so you can use the information below as inspiration. Most importantly, FOLLOW THE TEMPLATE EXACTLY. That means that you provide the information the funder is asking for in the section the funder is asking for it. Proposals are judged not only by the quality of the research but also by how likely it is that it will lead or contribute to the expected impact. To be successful, you will need to make this extremely clear to the funder and the reviewers.

[defintions]

Typically, funders ask for impact pathways (logical chain of events), and impact plans (how to reach it / strengthen the chain of events) to show to them how you will create impact in a plan-like structure. For NWO and EU we have deduced impact proposal templates and incorporated what the goal of the section and a tip or trick on what not to forget or make sure you do in this section.
