At the UT, you can work hybrid. This means that you can carry out your work partly on campus and partly from home, if your position and activities allow it. Hybrid working offers space to combine work and private life and contributes to sustainable and healthy working. At the same time, the campus will remain the place where we meet, collaborate, share knowledge and build our academic community. That is why working on campus is the starting point within the UT. Here you can read what hybrid working means in practice.
Would you like to view the formal agreements and conditions? Then consult the Hybrid Working Regulations in the Staff Manual.
Working on campus is the basic principle
The campus is your primary workplace. Here you will work together with colleagues, meet students and participate in activities that contribute to cooperation and connection within the university. That is why you work at least 60% of your weekly working time from your primary place of work. The rest of the working time you can work from home (or sometimes from another location) if your work allows it. Hybrid working is a possibility within the UT, not an automatic right. The nature of your work and the cooperation within the team are leading in this.
Agreements on hybrid working
Together with your supervisor, you make agreements about hybrid working. The work, cooperation within the team and accessibility are central to this. You record the agreements you make and discuss them regularly, for example during the annual appraisal.
Working hours and accessibility
Hybrid working is about where you work, not when you work. The working hours and agreements that apply within the UT therefore continue to apply, regardless of whether you work on campus or at home. During your work schedule, you are reasonably available to colleagues, students and other work relations. You do not have to be available outside your work schedule. Only if you have an on-call service or if something can reasonably be expected of you, it may be necessary for you to be available.
A healthy and safe home office
When you work from home, it is important that your workplace is healthy and safe. A well-equipped workplace helps to work pleasantly and prevent physical complaints. Before you make agreements about hybrid working, you should therefore go through the workplace scan. This scan helps you to set up your workplace in an ergonomic way. The UT supports you in this. You can request facilities for your home office via the Service Portal. Do you have questions about the design of your workplace? Then you can ask for advice from the prevention officer (HSE coordinator) of your faculty or service.
Home working allowances
If you work from home, you can make use of the allowances that apply within the UT for working from home. To be eligible for this, register your working from home days in MyHR.
Important to know:
- For a working day, you will receive either a home working allowance or a commuting allowance.
- The amount of the homeworking allowance and internet allowance follows the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
- The internet allowance is paid monthly.
Working safely and responsibly
Even when you work off-campus, you remain responsible for the safe handling of information and data. The same rules for information security, privacy and knowledge security apply both on and off campus.
Do you work from home or at another location? Then make sure you:
- works via EduVPN;
- does not use unsecured Wi-Fi networks;
- use the UT-managed laptop;
- handles personal data, research data and confidential information with care;
- follows the guidelines for information security and privacy.
Working (partly) from abroad
Do you want to work from abroad? Then it is good to know that specific rules apply to this. This has to do with taxation, social security, labor law and information security, among other things.
