Replay: Campus Talks S02E01

In the spring of 2020, the University of Twente launched its online talk show ‘Campus Talks’. Now there is a second season. On 2 February, philosopher of technology Professor Peter-Paul Verbeek talked to the university’s new rector magnificus Tom Veldkamp and physicist Hans Hilgenkamp.

The monthly episodes of Campus Talks in 2021 will cover a variety of themes. For example, the new rector magnificus Tom Veldkamp shared his vision for the university and his ambitions for the next four years. He also talked about the university in 2021: the implications of online education, the challenge of carrying out research in these unique circumstances and our largely deserted campus. What could this pandemic mean for the longer-term future of the University of Twente – will it turn out to be a mountain or a molehill?

The University of Twente aims to provide a welcoming working environment for all staff regardless of their background, gender or ethnicity. Sterre Mkatini, our diversity and inclusion officer, set out exactly what we need to do to achieve that. She has had first-hand experience in this area, given her own South African and Dutch heritage and her years of experience living in various countries.

Developing countries

This year Hans Hilgenkamp, Professor of Physics, will be involved in the Global Future Council on Scientific Collaboration at the World Economic Forum. He wants to provide better support for scientific education and research in developing countries. He has been appointed for one year, so what would he like to achieve in that time?

Erik Kemp, a Computer Science student, is also a regular guest for five episodes of the talk show. He showed us how important data visualisation is. After all, graphs and images can easily be manipulated, so what do you need to look out for?

Performance by Musilon

The second regular section of the show is cultural. The University of Twente has almost twenty cultural student associations – ranging from music, theatre and singing to breakdance and theatre sports, and everything in between. Each episode will feature an online performance by a particular group. The choral association Musilon kicked of.
