UT Professor Dannis Brouwer fellow of the American Society for Precision Engineering

The College of Fellows of the American Society for Precision Engineering recognizes Dannis Brouwer (Faculty ET) as having contributed to the advancement of the art and practice of precision engineering by significant original research, innovations, education and outreach, or service to the profession. The ASPE is about 600-800 members worldwide and Brouwer is the 6th fellow and the first of the Netherlands academies.

Precision engineering is a discipline that encompasses the design, development, and manufacturing of and for high-accuracy components, instruments, and machines. In the Netherlands, precision engineering is big with ASML, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Demcon and VDL, among others.

Dannis M. Brouwer received an MSc. degree in mechanical engineering, in 1998, and a post master (PDEng) degree in mechatronic design in 2001 from Eindhoven University of Technology. In 2007, he received the doctoral degree in mechanics from the University of Twente. Dannis M. Brouwer has 8 years of industrial experience with Philips Centre for Industrial Technology (CFT), Eindhoven, the Netherlands and Demcon Advanced Mechatronics, Enschede, the Netherlands.

He was appointed full Professor at the University of Twente in 2020 and is now chairing the Precision Engineering lab focusing on precision motion of mechatronic and robotic systems. He has co-authored over 50 refereed journal articles, 90 conference contributions and 8 patents on a variety of subjects including flexure mechanisms, kinematics, macro and micro manipulators, variable impedance robotics and precision engineering.

In 2015 he received the prestigious personal VIDI grant for his large range of motion flexure research, where he was ranked 1st/48. For three years he has served as a Director-at-Large for the American Society for Precision Engineering and he has been Associate Editor for Precision Engineering for 8 years.

“As part of my fellowship and to share my research I would like to show the T-Flex. A more detailed film about it will follow shortly. The T-Flex is a fully-flexure based hexapod uniquely combining large range of motion and precision manipulation in 6 degrees of freedom. It is designed for automated precision positioning and alignment of parts and components ranging from miniature optics to large panels."
