First TechMed event on 6 june

On Saturday, 6 June 2019, the Technical Medical Centre (TechMed Centre) at the University of Twente will hold its first event. The TechMed Centre is dedicated to improving healthcare through personalized innovative technology. The latest developments in research and innovation will be presented during the event. Remke Burie, managing director of the TechMed Centre explains: “We collaborate closely with a wide range of partners: medical specialists, the business community, government, healthcare and knowledge institutions, funding agencies and citizens. Collaboration of this kind is essential in developing future proof solutions to current challenges in healthcare.”

Remke Burie will open the event with scientific director Nico Verdonschot, before giving the floor to keynote speaker Bas van den Dungen, director-general of Curative Care at the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. He will explain the Ministry’s vision of medical technology as recently submitted to the parliament. Mr Van den Dungen’s speech will be followed by an interactive discussion with the audience.

The second keynote speaker is the internationally renowned scientist Professor Peter N. Burns of the Univeristy of Toronto. For over 20 years, Professor Burns has been a researcher in the field of medical ultrasound imaging and blood flow measurement. He analyses how ultrasound interacts with moving blood and the dynamic properties of the blood stream and blood vessels themselves. Professor Burns’ contribution will be followed by five pitches on TechMed Centre’s core research domains. The morning will conclude with a plenary lecture by Dr Jonne Doorduin, assistant professor and technical physician at Radboud University Medical Centre. His research activities focus on improving muscle function in patients with neuromuscular disorders, such as respiratory muscle weakness.

Parallel sessions and conclusion

After lunch, participants will be able to choose from three parallel sessions that focus on TechMed’s strategic interfaculty programmes: ‘Personalized eHealth technology’, ‘Implementation of technology in healthcare’ or ‘Healthcare Robotics. The event will conclude with a plenary session to discuss the role citizens can play in developing technological innovations in healthcare.

The TechMed Event is being organized for the first time this year. Its purpose is to offer a meeting place for all relevant partners. It will be a day of inspiration and learning, with a clear and insightful focus on the the latest developments in the field of innovative care and research. Or, in the words of Remke Burie: “We hope to meet new and existing partners and to encourage collaborations that lead to new healthcare innovations.”
