Alternative access

If full-text access through the University Library subscriptions is not available several alternative routes are available to you.

Plug-ins

Kopernio
Kopernio platform has recently been acquired by Clarivate (Web Of Science) and offers a legal access plugin to your Chrome and Firefox browser, for fast on-campus and off-campus access.

Unpaywall
Unpaywall is a free web-browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that indexes papers from more than 5,000 repositories worldwide, including preprint servers and institutional databases.

Request a copy via author

When an author shares his/her publications through ResearchGateAcademia or Mendeley, you could create a free account on these platforms and try to contact the corresponding author for a personal copy. This is allowed under the fair use agreements.
It is also an option to contact the author directly through the contact information mentioned in the article.

Google Scholar and Google Scholar Button

Google Scholar contains abstracts, full text and links to full text of all kind of documents with some scientific value across the disciplines.
Also check out this e-module for more information about using Google.
Just type in the title of an article to see if an accessible version is available – using quotation marks around the title if you get too many results.

With the Google Scholar button added to your browser, you get easy access to Google Scholar from any web page. Find full text on the web or in your university library. Select the title of the paper on the page you’re reading, and click the Scholar button to find it.

Interlibrary Loan

Via the University Library you can request copies of articles through Interlibrary Loan.

Social Media

It is also possible to contact some authors for a copy of their work on social media, like Twitter or LinkedIn. Some people also use the hashtag #icanhazpdf on Twitter to request other users for the full text of a paper. Be aware though that not all publishers allow free distribution of their journal articles.
