From an energy-neutral zilverling to an energy-neutral campus

Based on its ‘high-tech, human touch’ mission, the University of Twente needs to take up an exemplary position with respect to the sustainable use of energy. We propose to gradually achieve an energy-neutral campus. The first step consists of creating an energy-neutral Zilverling.

The Zilverling building is an excellent fit for energy-neutrality due to the following:

  • It is primarily an office building without any expensive/special rooms with special energy requirements;
  • Its energy consumption and energy profile are very predictable (lighting, heating, computers);
  • Its flat roof is very suitable for the installation of a great number of solar panels;
  • A sufficient passive cooling system is already in place (based on air circulation);
  • There is a basement that can be used for energy storage.

Finally, and importantly, the Zilverling contains three research groups that occupy themselves with energy modelling, smart grids, energy storage et cetera:

  • EEMCS/CAES, Professor Gerard Smit;
  • EEMCS/DMMP, Professor Johann Huurink;
  • EEMCS/DACS, Professor Haverkort.

Moreover, the EEMCS/SC department, Professor Jurriaan Schmitz (located in the Carré building) is also interested in this project in order to design new materials and connections for solar panels.

Furthermore, BMS is interested in the field of user perception and user participation as well as in the impact of financial measures (incentives) of/on energy measures.

These groups regularly execute national and international projects in this field (often collaborating with each other) and have a solid (and regional) network of energy-related companies at their disposal (see below).


The concrete proposal is to make the Zilverling building energy-neutral. This can be realized by means of:

  • installation of solar panels on the roof;
  • installation of energy storage systems in the basement;
  • reusing residual heat from the Teehuis;
  • an integrated approach to heating, cooling and power consumption.

An overall plan needs to be developed, for which we will use state-of-the-art methods and techniques that are developed at UT as we speak by the aforementioned research groups.

In addition to these research groups, the following UT internal partners will also be invited to participate:

  • Facility Service (insight into energy profiles, construction of the required infrastructure, etc.);
  • the EEMCS MT, as representatives of the Zilverling inhabitants;
  • ICTS (required IT/network connectivity).

In the corresponding fields, UT has excellent contacts with the following external (regional) parties:

  • IPSUM, a start-up company in the field of energy consumption planning (http://www.ipsumenergy.com/index.html)
  • Raedthuys, a company that focuses on sustainable energy management (http://www.raedthuys.nl/)
  • TrioGen, a young business that focuses on regaining residual heat (http://www.triogen.nl/)
  • COGAS might be interested in participating as well (http://www.cogas.nl/).

Finally, EnergieMissie (http://www.energiemissie.nl/home/), which deals with monitoring energy consumption, is an interesting potential partner.
