Workshops

In the 2017 edition of the Week of Inspiration, the guest lectures will be complemented with interesting, thought-provoking, and inspiring workshops. These workshops are aimed at students and organized throughout the week. Under professional guidance of an expert, you will get inspired by, explore, and create new and interesting ideas.

Financial Independence of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

How can SMEs become financially independent?

What does it mean to be financially independent? What is the importance of internal and external funds? How do these contribute towards strengthening the financial position of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)?

If you're interested in starting or expanding your startup, or just academically interested in this theme, sign up for Monday's workshop led by Prof. Rez Kabir. You will see how information technology can help getting an instant picture of the financial health of a firm.

Chance Calculations in Card Games

Chance calculations in (card) games

People of all ages play games. Children play games like rock-paper-scissors and card games. Adults play games like poker and dice games. In this workshop, we discuss how probabilities may help us to play games. Among others, we discuss whether or not you should play a dice game involving money, the probability of obtaining a desired hand in poker, and which strategy is good when playing a game.

Overtuigen met Retorica

NOTE: This workshop will be conducted in Dutch, therefore the description is in Dutch

Job Interview

Are You Always Emotionally Intelligent at Work and In and Before Job Interviews?

In the first part of this workshop, a lecture will be given on Emotional Intelligence. In the second part, we will explore, together, in what ways job interviews might be enriched through (working on) this skill: on both sides of the spectrum, job candidate and those involved in the selection process. Come prepared with your own questions in this realm, and feel free to consult in advance the many tips and tricks to be googled for successful interviewing.

Logic Math

What we know we cannot know

Many people have heard the so-called "liar paradox", ascribed to the Cretan Epimenides who lived around 600 BC. His statement, "all Cretans are liars", when reflectively applied to that particular statement of that particular Cretan, gives rise to an internal contradiction from which it is hard to escape - even though this particular case is not the best example of a true paradox.

Mathematical logic has created similar mind-benders that are much more disturbing because they actually reveal the limitations of proofs and therefore of mathematics itself: it has been shown that not everything that is true is also provable. In this workshop we will explore this situation, try to wrap our heads around it, and discuss the larger implications.

Terrorism, Democracy, and the Rule of Law

In the fight against terrorism, governments are faced with finding a balance between preventing terrorist activities and maintaining the rule of law. In any democracy, the tension between the two is obvious. We may need to invade the privacy of individuals to find potential terrorists, we may need to protect our touristic sites in cities, freeze personal financial assets, or share our travel details with other governments. And, all of this at the possible expense of individual rights that form the cornerstone of democracies. How far are you willing to go and where would you draw the line?

The discussion is introduced and lead by Ramses A. Wessel, Professor of International and European Law & Governance and advisor of the Dutch government on issues of public international law.

Integrity

Workshop on Integrity in scientific and professional practices.

The aim of this workshop is to explore integrity in scientific and professional practices. What is it? Why is it important? What if it gets difficult to keep your integrity? Why not rather play the political game? Is ‘alternative facts’ a matter of lacking integrity? Does integrity loose its meaning in the age of alternative facts? Has your integrity ever been at stake. What happens if someone puts your integrity into question? Did you ever struggle to keep your integrity in a difficult situation? Are there matters of integrity in presenting yourself on Facebook or Linkedin? These questions we will be the starting-point of critical and creative work during this workshop. The structure of this workshop consists of three parts: (1) Theoretical and practical aspects of integrity will be briefly introduced, and themes for further discussion will be introduced. You will also be invited to propose other relevant themes. (2) Groups on these themes are formed, to work on it and prepare a presentation. (3) Each group presents their findings and conclusions, with room for further discussion.

Mobile App Development

Introduction to mobile app development

The basics of Android app development are taught in this workshop. After a short introduction into key concepts such as object-oriented programming, you will make your own simple app. It is assumed the participants have some programming experience, but no experience in programming for Android.

Participants are asked to bring their laptop and to install the software following software before the workshop:

Android Studio download: https://developer.android.com/studio/index.html

Install instructions: https://developer.android.com/studio/install.html

Installation takes about 30 minutes and to be safe, you should have 10GB of free memory before installation. If you want to test your app on your own phone, you should bring your usb phone charger.

The first part of the workshop is mostly about setting up the software, which takes quite some time. If you want to make a head start, you could start with this tutorial before the workshop:

Some errors might show up at the bottom of the window. Try to follow the instructions or find a solution online.
