The world is rapidly becoming data-driven, more than ever before. Raw data is available from very different sources, its quality differs widely, it may be streamed at very high rates, or stored in huge, slowly accessible data stores. By-and-large, extracting information from data has always been, and will continue to be, in demand for a variety of analytical purposes. The mission of the Database group is to develop methods and technology that efficiently, effectively and securely retrieve and extract information from large unstructured data sources. Arriving at a high quality of information is our founding principle.
Within the group, we currently cover the following areas of expertise:
- Probabilistic models for information retrieval and data quality
- Models for federated search and web harvesting
- Search and analysis in encrypted data
- Methods for empirical evaluation of information retrieval methods
We apply our expertise in cooperation with partners from other domains, in order to develop new technology in the context of real-world data and analytics. Our current focus domains are Social Media Analytics, Open Source Intelligence, Health, Social Sciences and Creative Industry. Obviously, partner domains change over time, yet we invariantly value research in a multi-disciplinary context.
To expand and strengthen our areas of expertise we are looking for a colleague at the level of assistant professor. We expect a candidate to bring added value to what the group has to offer, for example, in machine learning, big data, or natural language processing. Scientific excellence is a must and should be demonstrated by high-quality output. A successful candidate will also demonstrate her or his intrinsic motivation and strong abilities for teaching at the bachelor and masters level. We value a vision on academic teaching, blending the physical and digital experience. The candidate should have excellent communication skills, allowing efficient interaction with colleagues.

- A PhD in Computer Science or a related discipline

We offer you a temporary position of assistant professor for three years. Depending on your qualifications an appointment as an associate professor can be an option.
The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Universities (CAO). Depending on relevant background and experience, the gross monthly salary on a full time basis ranges from € 3,427 to € 5,780 gross per month. Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8,3%.
