PhD position: In vivo arterial flow imaging with ultrasound and microbubbles.

The Physics of Fluids group is part of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, of the Technical Medical (TechMed) Centre and, since 2018 is also a Max Planck Center for complex fluid dynamics. The activities of the group encompass turbulence, soft matter, wetting, granular flow, biomedical flow imaging, ultrasound, microfluidics and nanoscale flow, phase change dynamics, heat and mass transfer… The group therefore offers a rich, multidisciplinary and very international (over a dozen nationalities) environment where experimental physics, theoretical physics and large scale simulation work in synergy to approach a collection of physical problem that span from fundamental to applied and from curiosity-driven research to industry-driven research. The group is in embedded within an international network and promotes international collaboration and exchanges.

Job description

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Europe, with an increasing prevalence worldwide. Current monitoring and subsequent treatment options take into account only very simple geometrical generalized parameters, while patients could benefit substantially from the inclusion of personalized local blood flow patterns into therapy guidance. In this project, novel ultrasound-based flow imaging techniques will be developed specifically for carotid and abdominal applications. This project will make use of the newest ultrafast ultrasound plane wave technology plane wave combined with the new CMUT transducer technology to image flow in the carotid. Flow imaging in the deeper aorta will be enabled by ultrasound contrast agents.

The primary objective of this project is to demonstrate the proof-of-principle in patients of new vector flow imaging techniques. Two clinical evaluation pilot studies will be performed where flow patterns will be measured pre- and post- treatment, in patients with stenotic lesions and in patients with abdominal aneurysms. These studies address the clinically relevant question: can quantification of flow patterns around stenotic lesions and abdominal aneurysms contribute to improved diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients? The collected data will be used to evaluate whether the novel VFI techniques of this project will shape into a decisive tool for improved vascular diagnostics
