PhD Candidate Understanding sustainable urban systems with geospatial data analytics

The department of Geo-information Processing (GIP) of the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), part of the University of Twente in Enschede, the Netherlands deals with technological and methodological aspects of geo-information processing to solve complex application problems and to develop technology-oriented concepts for the new geo-information society.

According to recent UN’s report, more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas today, and the number is expected to increase to over two thirds by 2050. While sustainable urbanization is one of those key pillars to sustainable development, we are facing ubiquitous challenges in such process, from the booming figure of megacities worldwide to the increasing number of shrinking cities in some regions. The deluge of big data provides us with urban information at an unprecedented granularity; the blossom of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms strengthens our capacity to tackle various sustainable urbanization issues.

In resonance to the Sustainable Development Goals (i.e., SDG 11), within this PhD, you will collaborate with the supervisor and develop your research towards designing novel geospatial data (visual) analytical approaches makes cities and human settlement more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable.

Your profile

  • You have an MSc-level degree in the field of GIScience, statistics, or computer science
  • You have a strong background in statistics, machine learning, and computational skills (e.g., in Python)
  • You have demonstrated mapping and data visualization skills
  • You have demonstrated scientific creativity that has preferably resulted in a scientific publication
  • A strong interest in urban science and sustainability is an asset
  • Preferably, you have an affinity with a multi-cultural education environment

You will be fulltime employed for four years. Salary and conditions will be in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement (CAO-NU) of the Dutch Universities.

  • A starting salary of € 2.325,00 in the first year and a salary of € 2.972,00 in the fourth year gross per month;
  • A holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3%;
  • A solid pension scheme;
  • Minimum of 41 holiday days in case of full-time employment;

  • Costs for moving to Enschede may be reimbursed.

The Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) of the University of Twente provides international postgraduate education, research and project services in the field of geo-information science and earth observation using remote sensing and GIS.
