(BIO)ARTIFICIAL ORGANS

The aging of the population and scarcity of donor organs calls for new strategies for bioengineering of organs that could mimic or eventually replace patient failing organs. What if one could treat diabetes using an implantable device which can regulate glucose without the need of insulin injections? Or, if patients with a chronic kidney disease no longer have to go to the hospital for dialysis? According to Dimitrios Stamatialis, this can be achieved by a multidisciplinary approach combining biomaterial science, engineering and biology. Dimitrios talks about the challenges of developing (bio)artificial organs and how these organs can change lives.

Dimitrios Stamatialis is professor of (Bio)artificial organs in the department of Biomaterials Science & Technology and coordinator of the research domain of Bioengineering technologies at the TechMed institute. He is also a member of the EUTox group dealing with coordination of European research on uremic toxins and Editor of the “international journal of artificial organs” - the official journal of the European Society for artificial organs. In 2016, he won the ‘UT in the Media Prize’ for his research into bioartifical kidneys and in 2008 Biomedical Technology students elected him teacher of the year.
