1 OCTOBER 2021 – VRIJHOF – UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE CAMPUS
THE FOURTH EDITION OF THE ANNUAL ALUMNI TALKS TAKES PLACE ON FRIDAY 1 OCTOBER IN THE ATMOSPHERIC AMPHITHEATRE, THREE ALUMNI SHARE THEIR CAREER PROGRESSION WITH THE AUDIENCE AND PRESENT THEIR VISION OF THE FUTURE.
You will probably already know Jonathan Bennink (IDE’10) from television: he is the ‘Brickmaster’ on the successful Saturday night programme LEGO Masters 2021. Bennink became a Lead Designer at the LEGO Creative Play Lab - part of the LEGO Group in Denmark, six years ago. He submitted an elaborate open application that took him almost a year to put together. In it, he presented an idea that involved using LEGO Blocks to play a video game similar to SIM City. Jonathan was hired and subsequently spent almost two years working on the well-known LEGO Dimensions, which was eventually marketed in partnership with Warner Bros. After this, he was given creative leadership over the development of LEGO Super Mario, a collaboration between LEGO and Nintendo. Jonathan studied Industrial Design at the UT from 2003 to 2010.
Peter Riezebos (Psy’14) is an artist, writer and scientist. Between 2006 and 2014, he studied Psychology, Communication Studies, and Philosophy at the UT. Not bad for a former MAVO (general secondary education) pupil with depression and diagnoses of Asperger’s and ADHD. From an early age, his fierce associative abilities allowed him to translate his experiences with these conditions into paintings, drawings, and poems. In his book ‘From mavo to Harvard’ (2014), he recounts how he transformed these learning obstacles into abilities to shine in education. In this book, he also makes recommendations for better alignment between education and the individual student. It was no surprise to anyone that - after his time at the UT - he left for Shanghai to do his doctoral research in educational technology, which he did not end up completing. His paintings, which followed neo-expressionist traditions, created a stir. Nowadays, his work can be found in private collections and galleries all over the world.
Martha Riemsma (Com'00) was also part of the Alumni Talks programme 2021, but unfortunately she is not able to attend anymore. At the moment we are looking for a new speaker.
