Dutch start-up tests innovative solution for easier e-bike fleet management on the University of Twente campus
Dutch start-up Revost is taking an important step towards the market launch of its smart e-bike docking station, Lock and Load. On 3 July, the company unveiled its innovation at the University of Twente, where a pilot project is now underway. Employees of the department Campus & Facility Management (CFM) will use the system for trips between different locations across campus.
The Lock and Load combines automatic locking and charging of e-bikes in one user-friendly system. Users simply place their bike in the dock, after which the system automatically secures and charges it. Revost aims to eliminate the hassle of loose charging cables and heavy chain locks, which many organisations and e-bike owners see as unnecessary obstacles that complicate daily use and fleet management. The innovation also reflects the growing popularity of e-bikes: in 2025, 49% of all bicycles sold in the Netherlands were electric, accounting for 73% of total revenue in the Dutch bicycle market.
origins of lock and load
Revost was founded in 2024 within the Entrepreneurial Lab of technology consultancy TMC, an innovation programme that enables employees to develop their own technology ventures. Previous successes from the programme include the Throwabot, a reconnaissance robot now used by the Dutch Defence organisation. Lock and Load is the latest innovation to emerge from the lab and move towards commercialisation. Alongside TMC and the University of Twente, Revost is working with regional partners Bazz E-bikes and Novel-T to bring the innovation to market.
Revost is led by founder Paul Stöver and co-founder Maarten Smit, both alumni of the University of Twente. Maarten graduated in Industrial Design Engineering in 2025, while Paul completed Mechanical Engineering in 2022. Both currently work at TMC. As frequent cyclists themselves, they experienced the challenges firsthand. The idea for Lock and Load originated during Paul's daily commute to one of his TMC projects.
Stöver explains: "I kept seeing people with e-bikes and regular bicycles struggling with chargers and heavy chain locks. That's when I thought: there has to be an easier way. It also fits perfectly with our vision—we want to encourage as many people as possible to choose the bicycle. By removing these kinds of barriers, cycling becomes just that little bit easier. The bicycle is, and always will be, a fantastic mode of transport."
designed for the business market
The solution is aimed at organisations that operate e-bike fleets on a daily basis, such as bike rental companies, businesses with internal bicycle fleets, and employers looking to encourage sustainable mobility among their staff. Organisations can continue using their existing bicycles, as the original chargers remain in use and are connected through the docking station. This keeps implementation straightforward and limits additional investment. The system also enables staffless rental concepts and more efficient fleet management.
pilot as a stepping stone
During the pilot, CFM employees will use the e-bikes to travel between different locations on the University of Twente campus. The bicycles are provided by project partner Bazz E-bikes. For Revost, the pilot represents the final and most important validation phase before commercialisation. The start-up aims to assess whether the solution truly meets market needs and delivers sufficient added value for organisations seeking more efficient e-bike fleet management.
The pilot results will be used to further optimise the product. If the validation proves successful, Revost plans to commercially launch Lock and Load in 2026 and begin seeking investment to support further growth.
