Minister Heleen Herbert to deliver keynote at University of Twente Academic Year Opening

UT alumna and Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Heleen Herbert will deliver the keynote speech at the opening of the University of Twente’s 2026–2027 academic year on Monday, 31 August. The event will take place at the Muziekcentrum in Enschede and forms part of the university’s celebrations marking its 65th anniversary.

The anniversary year centres on the theme Courage. For 65 years, the University of Twente has been shaped by people who dare to take initiative, recognise new opportunities and turn ideas into action. The opening of the academic year will explore the courage needed to address the societal and technological challenges of the future.

As both a UT alumna (Industrial engineering and management, ’95) and the current Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate, Heleen Herbert is uniquely positioned to reflect on the connection between science, innovation and societal development. Prior to the ceremony, Herbert will visit Kennispark Twente to meet entrepreneurs and regional leaders from the Twente high-tech ecosystem. Discussions will focus on the region’s economic ambitions, future growth opportunities and Twente’s contribution to national innovation and economic development goals.

The programme also includes the presentation of the Van den Kroonenberg Oeuvre Awards and the Graduation Awards 2026. Four other alumni who are making an impact through their work will share their personal stories and experiences. Live music will be provided by the Bartenders Reunion.

The Academic Year Opening will take place on Monday, 31 August 2026, at the Muziekcentrum in Enschede. Doors open at 2:00 p.m. and the programme starts at 3:00 p.m. You may register for attending the OAY on the website.
