The University of Twente and the Federal University of Espírito Santo entered into a formal relation last week with the signing of a memorandum of understanding.
With the appointment of a country coordinator for Brazil, the UT has clearly made a choice to focus on Brazil for academic corporation, student recruitment and exchange. As part of understanding the academic network present in Brazil, a review of the joint publications between UT and Brazilian universities was performed. One of the main partners based on the number of shared publications, and the long term track record is the Federal University of Espírito Santo, in Vitoria.
Several UT PhD alumni work at UFES. These alumni continue working with the University of Twente. This provides the basis for a long term successful cooperation between both institutes, which currently focusses on the domain of computer science. Although research collaboration have been taking place for more than a decade, the link between the groups was never formalized. The step taken now will help UFES to source funding in Brazil for student and staff mobility under the new CAPES programme “More Science”.
During a meeting following the signing ceremony, UT and UFES have decided to extend this memorandum of understanding to an agreement for students and staff exchange. Furthermore, UT and UFES will over the next month work towards broadening the existing relations to extend into other academic domains.
