Enrolment for MOOC Nanotechnology for Health is open

On 20 February 2017, the open online course Nanotechnology for Health will be launched on the worldwide platform FutureLearn. Enrolment for the University of Twente’s fifth MOOC has been opened.

The course will discuss in detail the virtually endless ways in which nanotechnology can be used in new medical applications. Professors and researchers from the University’s MESA+ and MIRA research institutes will guide the participants through the world of nanotechnology healthcare applications. The MOOC will last four weeks and participants will spend about 3 hours on the course material every week. Participants can receive a certificate after completing the course.

The rise of nanotechnology applications

The application of nanotechnology in the medical sector is in the midst of a meteoric rise. Using nanotechnology, doctors can for instance detect diseases by analysing a patient’s breath, set up micro laboratories for running blood analyses wherever you are, or track cancers by means of a simple urine test.

The MOOC will discuss and explain all these applications. How do they work? How are micro and nanotechnologies developed in the UT labs and clean rooms? The course will not only delve into the technical applications, but will also discuss the ethical and social implications that these new technologies can have.

“In the near future, medical care will change radically thanks to nanotechnology. Just imagine that we will in fact be able to create devices such as the Medical Tricorder that is used in Star Trek to quickly make highly accurate diagnoses. Are you curious to hear how? This MOOC will guide you through the latest nanotechnology developments and the impact they are having on medical diagnostics”, says Martin Bennink.

 Fifth MOOC

The Nanotechnology for Health MOOC is the fifth MOOC that is offered by the University of Twenty. Since October 2015, the UT has been sharing its knowledge though the FutureLearn platform that allows participants to take online courses from the comfort of their own home. The other MOOC courses that are already available are E-Health, Ultrasound Imaging, GeoHealth, and Supply Chain Innovation.
