Innovative water-buffering system under new Faculty Club parking area

Renovation of the parking area adjacent to the Faculty Club restaurant started mid December 2016. The renovation follows from a planned contract for the required major maintenance works to the surface, lighting, leads and pipes, as well as in view of the risk of flooding.

Aquabase; an innovative water-buffering system
Due to the increasing risk of flooding from peak downpours and protracted periods of precipitation, the current sewer system continues to come under rising pressure. To prevent future problems, the decision has been made to construct a completely new water-buffering system below the parking area adjacent to the Faculty Club restaurant. This new system, known as an Aquabase, forms a rainwater buffer in hollow spaces below the surface of the car park. To guard against the danger of collapse, special technology has been used to guarantee the integrity and rigidity of the foundations.

The Aquabase system, which is currently being installed at the UT campus, will only be the second in the Netherlands. The system has been developed in collaboration with TenCate Geosynthetics, Van de Bosch Beton, Rotim and Tauw Engineering. Krinkels, our own maintenance contractor, will be responsible for the installation work.
