UT jumps 11 spots in QS ranking

The University of Twente has risen in the latest QS Ranking from spot 188 to spot 177 worldwide.

The ranking has just been published. The increase is noteworthy in view of the fact that 10 of the 13 Dutch universities on the list dropped in the rankings. Victor van der Chijs, President of the UT Executive Board, is very satisfied, saying, “Our university also rose a few spots on another global list, the Shanghai Ranking, which was published last month. Clearly, the University of Twente has a pronounced scientific impact.”

The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking is based partly on the universities’ reputations as gauged among 75,000 scientists. Other factors include the institutions’ reputations among employers, the number of students per lecturer, the researchers’ citation scores and the relative number of international students and staff members.

UT has a remarkably strong position in the number of citations per researcher, normalized per field of study. The university’s worldwide ranking for this indicator rose from 28th to 25th place between 2015 and 2016, thereby reaffirming its first-place ranking in the Netherlands for the second year in a row. The staff-student ratio has also improved. The scores for international students and staff remained virtually constant.

The University of Twente is a leading international research university, where excellence in science is combined with an international orientation. This is reflected in this year’s QS ranking, in which the University of Twente excels in the number of citations per researcher.
