NIAS-fellowship for Prof. Juliette Walma van der Molen

Prof. Juliette Walma van der Molen, PhD, Professor of Talent Development, Science and Technology at the Department of ELAN, has been elected a fellow of the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) as of 5 September 2016.

The NIAS is an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences [Koninklijke Nederlandse Academie van Wetenschappen, KNAW] that selects approximately fifty fellows each year, divided across two semesters, both in the Netherlands and abroad, for a residential fellowship.

The NIAS encourages scientific innovation in the humanities and social sciences (with life sciences and beta sciences as common ground) by offering researchers time and space for research, reflection and interaction. Juliette's fellowship will be partially financed by the Netherlands Foundation for Psychotechnology [Nederlandse Stichting voor Psychotechniek, NSvP]. The NSvP connects scientific research with practical applications in the field of talent development of young people and their preparation for the labour market.

As a NIAS fellow, she will mainly be working on a book about future-oriented education. This topic involves questions such as: What skills, attitudes, motivations and self-concepts should we in any event develop in children and young people so that they can deal with the challenges of the future as effectively as possible (for example, in the field of technological developments, lifelong learning or an increasingly flexible labour market)? How can we professionalize schools and educators so that they will implement these qualities more conscientiously in their education? How can you measure and value innovative and creative qualities more effectively? And what role do these qualities, as well as image-forming processes, play in the choice of study and profession? Juliette's NIAS/NSvP fellowship runs until February 2017.
