Stable position UT in Times Higher Education Ranking

After the sharp rise of last year, University of Twente occupies almost the same position in this year’s Times Higher Education World Ranking. On a total of 980 institutions worldwide, UT is 153rd.

In 2015, University of Twente went up 61 places compared to the year before, and ended well within the top 200, on the 149th position. Higher citation impact and higher industry income were significant factors causing this rise. Apart from these factors, THE also ranks teaching, research and international outlook. Compared to last year’s scores, these all are stable or show a light growth. Industrial income ends up slightly lower, but is still a very strong pillar according to THE – based on this solely, UT would end up 62nd. Of all 13 Dutch universities, UT is at 10th position, of Dutch technical universities second.

“We see that our research, citations and international cooperation are, again, highly valued. At the same time, we have set major steps in our education and teaching. As this type  of ranking values ‘teaching reputation’, these changes become visible on a longer term. I am fully aware that we have to work on visibility and enhancing sustainability for this”, Rector Magnificus Prof Ed Brinksma says.

According to the Association of  Universities in The Netherlands (VSNU), it is a good sign that all Dutch universities end up within the top 200. After the United States, Great-Britain and Germany, The Netherlands is represented best in this year’s ranking. At the same time, VSNU points out that universities in Asia will rise quickly. Maintaining the top positions of Dutch universities will not be self-explanatory. Rankings like THE, QS and Shanghai will help them to keep focus.
