DesignLab, IxD lab and Stanford D-school join forces

The IxD lab of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, Stanford D-school in the US and the UT’s DesignLab worked together during the CuriousU Summer School and join forces for the future.

Scientists associated with these labs run several workshops in the UT DesignLab during CuriousU and visit the UT the coming period. Furthermore, the various design labs are going to do research into smart homes and self-propelled cars, in collaboration with the UT.

Geke Ludden is UT track leader of the Design the Future track of CuriousU: “The Summer School was the reason to invite Denmark and the US to come and teach workshops. The idea behind it is that, besides it being beneficial to the students to attend these workshops, the Summer School is a great way for researchers from other universities to get to know us (the UT and the scientists) and to further shape a new collaboration.”

Contacts between the UT and Stanford University have existed for a number of years, but are now further strengthened through the visit of three researchers: David Sirkin, Rebecca Currano and Hamish Tennent from the Stanford Center for Design Research. As part of the Summer School they will teach a workshop on human centred design. Furthermore, the Human Media Interaction group conducts research with them (and Master's student David Goedicke) on a self-propelled car.

Anna from IxD lab will be a Design United research fellow with the department of Design of the Engineering Technology faculty for the coming year. Design United is the 4TU research centre for design. "The coming year, Anna Vallgårda will visit the Interaction Design and Human Centred Design groups on several occasions and we will be collaborating on the use of medical technology and eHealth in the home environment and more generally on interactive technology in homes (smart homes is the more popular term)." Anna Vallgårda is head of the IxD lab and she taught a workshop on material expressions as part of the Summer School. Students tried their hands at thermochromic paint, textiles and electronics to explore how interactive technology can take shape within the living room.

Miriam Iliohan (Project Manager DesignLab): “For the DesignLab it is of major interest to further develop these contacts with other design labs. We want to learn from each other how a design lab can be successful and inspiring to both researchers and students and how we can further fit the UT DesignLab in with the questions from society."
