First ATLAS graduates guaranteed places on a Master's programme

In 2013, the University of Twente established its University College with the Bachelor's Honours programme Technology and Liberal Arts & Sciences (ATLAS).

On Saturday 25 June, twenty students will be awarded their Bachelor’s degrees during a closed ceremony. Dean of the University College, Professor Jennifer Herek says: “These top international students have already been given places on prestigious Master's programmes at renowned universities. The combination of technology and social sciences gives ATLAS students a unique and broad understanding of societal problems. That’s what separates them from students at other University Colleges in the Netherlands.”

On 24 June, the day before the graduation ceremony, ATLAS students from University College Twente will present their projects in an exhibition at the University of Twente. The programme’s approximately 80 students will inspire visitors with their projects during the exhibition and a number of workshops related to the ATLAS programme.

Unique projects

The research of first-year student Stef Koenis on in vitro meat is a prime example of an ATLAS project. The research question, which Stef answers from various perspectives, is: ‘Do we, the consumers, actually want to eat an in vitro steak?’ Another fine example is the project by first-year student Demi Vonk. Demi will be showing her documentary ‘The Real Life’ at the ATLAS exhibition. The documentary considers what adults perceive to be real life, and how young people can prepare for it.

ATLAS exhibition programme

The students will present their work in the Atrium of the Ravelijn building from 12.00 hrs onwards. Following the presentations, there will be various training sessions, workshops and lectures, given by both students and lecturers. The afternoon will end with a plenary session, during which lecturer of the year Martin van der Hoef (Chemical Engineering and Chemistry and ATLAS) will give a lecture. This year’s ATLAS lecturer of the year will also be announced at the end of the afternoon.

Registration is open

All those interested are welcome to attend the ATLAS exhibition. The exhibition will be in English. Visitors can register using this form. You can indicate which sessions you would like to attend on the form.

About ATLAS

University College Twente’s ATLAS programme is aimed at top-rate students who want to bridge the gap between social sciences and technology. Professor Jennifer Herek believes that this is what differentiates University College Twente from the seven other University Colleges in the Netherlands. University College Twente offers a three-year Bachelor's programme in Technology and Liberal Arts & Sciences (ATLAS). The programme is taught in English and crosses the boundary between the sciences and social sciences. The curriculum, which is project-based, places a true focus on the student.
