Second FFNT online workshop "Voice training" with Margarita Jeliazkova on Wednesday, January 20, 2021

When: Wednesday, January 20, 2021

Time: 12.00 - 14.00 hrs

Dr. Margarita Jeliazkova is a teacher, researcher, and politician, with a background in philosophy and political science. In addition, she is a trained classical singer. Margarita offers this training based on over 30 years of academic experience, including 10 years of experience in training and coaching teachers and over 10 years of experience as a voice teacher. She regularly gives workshops to university teachers, teacher trainees, and young researchers. Margarita also coaches teachers and other professional speakers in using their voices more effectively and with less strain, to avoid fatigue and voice abuse.

Workshop summary

At the University, using one’s voice professionally is of utmost importance: we teach, we present, and we communicate daily. Yet, most academics never have proper instruction on how to use their voices in a healthy and effective way. Two additional issues are the strain and stress of using a foreign language (e.g. English), and the fact that women face a few extra challenges - both physical, due to the specific influence of hormones on the voice, as psychological, as women are often expected to speak and sound in a particular ‘pleasing’ way. Teaching in times of pandemic is an additional challenge, as teaching online adds strain to our voices and calls for a different set of skills and adjustments.

What?

  • l Get acquainted with your voice.
  • l Learn how to keep your voice fit and healthy.
  • l Speak effectively and maintain interest without misuse of voice.
  • l Avoid fatigue and potential problems.
  • l Work on confidence, good posture, breathing, intonation,
    resonance, and articulation.
  • l Work online - use of microphones and headsets, contact with your audience.
  • l Individual tips and troubleshooting.
  • l No ‘one-size-fits-all’ tricks and recipes, no lengthy exercise programs.
  • l Handouts with essential information.

At the end of the training, participants will be better equipped  to use their voices professionally, online and offline:

  • To control their nerves during teaching and important presentations.
  • To speak with confidence, clarity, and conviction, to engage their listeners.
  • To use more color, more power, and more flexibility in their voice.
  • To handle questions with grace and authority.
  • To interact with the audience, verbally and non-verbally; to stay true to their own personal style and to communicate authentically.
  • To take care of their precious instrument - the voice - to prevent hoarseness
    and other common problems.
  • To take home.

Practical issues:

The training will be online. Please make sure that you have a good quality sound equipment. If possible, a broad-angle webcam: this will allow you to move around for some of the exercises.
