Quantum for Dummies

On the 7th of December, Pepijn Pinkse (Professor of Adaptive Quantum Optics) will be giving his inaugural lecture 'Light on Quantum Technology'. Quantum technology is seen as a promising technology for the future. But what exactly is quantum, how does it work, and how do we apply it? In the run-up to Pepijn's inauguration (7 December, 16.00h), QUANT Centre, MESA+, QuantumDelta NL and MinacNed jointly organise a symposium, Quantum for Dummies.

Date: 7 December 2023
Time: 11.30 - 15.00h
Location: Waaier 3, University of Twente
Organized by: QUANT Centre, MESA+, and sponsored by Quantum Delta NL and MinacNed

PROGRAM

Chair: Pepijn Pinkse

  • 11.30h: Walk-in with lunch (location: Foyer Waaier building)
  • 12.30h: Lecture by Ir. Bart Folkers (UT & Bonhoeffer College) - 'Basics of quantum: making sense of quantum weirdness'

Bart Folkers is a high school physics teacher and does a PhD in the didactics of Quantum Physics at the UT with Alexander Brinkman and Kirsten Stadermann. With his enthusiastic teaching style he manages to grasp and keep the attention of his pupils. He will introduce some fundamental quantum concepts such as wavefunctions, superposition and entanglement.

  • 13.00h: Lecture by Dr. Dipl.-Phys. Kirsten Stadermann (UT) - 'Explanation of demonstrations & experiments: discover quantum yourself'

Kirsten Stadermann has always been fascinated by how to spark students' curiosity to discover physics. She began her journey as a laser physicist, later inspiring young minds at secondary schools. She holds a PhD in quantum physics education. Presently, she is an assistant professor and teacher trainer at the UT. She will introduce various demo experiments that are on display during the break.

  • 13.15h: Coffee and tea break, incl. the opportunity to experiment with quantum
  • 13.45h: Lecture by Prof. Dr. Gerhard Rempe (Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics) - 'What is a photon?'

Gerhard Rempe is a director of the famous Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching, near Munich. He did seminal experiments with single atoms, single photons on the way to a quantum internet. He is also an inspiring teacher. In his talk he will enlighten you about the quantum of light, the photon.

  • 14.30h: Lecture by Dr. Jelmer Renema (UT and Quix Quantum) - 'Optical quantum computing'
