Integrated Optical Systems (i-OS)

Chair: Optical Systems (OS)

Introduction

The Integrated Optical Systems (i-OS) subgroup is embedded within the Optical Sciences chair. Our research activities focus on micro-/nano-scale integrated on-chip optical devices. In particular we are interested on the integration of active nano-/micro-devices such as amplifiers and lasers onto passive photonic technology platforms. We are also investigating how to exploit the beneficial aspects of plasmonics to produce integrated devices with novel and/or improved functionalities. We are mostly interested in applications in sensing and communications (i.e., on-chip optical interconnects).

Our activities range from design (typically using commercial Integrated Optics/NanoOptics simulation software such as Synopsys and Lumerical, fabrication (using the excellent clean-room facilities of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology) to optical characterization within the OS laboratories.
