What are the differences between MS Office 2010 and 2013?
Visit this website for a complete overview of the differences in functionality.
Installing Office 2013:
The installation process is taking a very long time. Does this mean there are any issues?
It is true that the installation process takes a long time. A lot has to happen, after all. MS Office 2013 is being installed, as are its updates, MS Office 2010 is deleted and the Multilanguage User interface (intended for Dutch spelling) is being installed.
If you have a relatively new computer with an SSD drive, the installation process will be briefest – around 40-60 minutes. If you have an older computer with a hard drive, it can take a lot longer, depending on the hardware you have.
During the installation process, updates are being installed and Windows says that the computer has to be restarted.
Do NOT restart the computer when Windows asks you to do so. The computer has to restart on its own, otherwise the MS Office 2013 installation process is interrupted.
What should I do once the installation of MS Office 2013 is complete?
The best thing to do is to start up an application such as Word or Excel. The final MS Office 2013 settings will then be modified. It is best to leave Outlook alone for now. We have noticed that it can take a very long time if Outlook is the first application you try to start.
I have just upgraded to MS Office 2013 and now even more updates are being installed.
ICTS has integrated all MS Office 2013 updates up to July 2015 in the suite. Unfortunately, Microsoft has released another major series of updates (over 1 GB in size) in August and September. These upgrades could not be integrated in the suite without it requiring further testing.
Where have my MS Office 2010 shortcuts gone?
After installing MS Office 2013, the shortcuts for MS Office 2010 will be gone. You have to recreate the shortcuts you want for MS Office 2013. To do so, click on the Start button, navigate to “Microsoft Office 2013,” select the application you wish to create a shortcut for by clicking on it with the right mouse button and click on “Create shortcut.” You can also choose to “pin” the application to the taskbar. It may also happen that individually created MS Office 2010 shortcuts are still visible, e.g. on your taskbar. These shortcuts will no longer work, so it is best to delete them and create new shortcuts for MS Office 2013.
What happens to my “Pinned Links”?
During the MS Office 2013 installation process, the “Pinned Links” will be deleted. This cannot be prevented. If you wish to save these links, you will have to write them down yourself.
What happened to the Start Screen for MS Office 2013 applications?
The Start Screen was considered a nuisance by users, so it is turned off by default. You can turn the Start Screen back on by checking the box marked “Display Start Screen” under “File,” “Options.”
Questions about Outlook
Why must I add all unknown email domains to the list of secure email domains all over again in Outlook?
During the installation process, the list of secure email domains is emptied. There is no other option than to manually add all email domains to the list whenever the notification pops up.
The Outlook weather report is displayed in Fahrenheit rather than Celsius.
To switch the Outlook weather report from Fahrenheit to Celsius, go to “File,” “Options” in Outlook. Scroll down to “Weather” on the Calendar tab and select “Celsius.” From this tab, you can also turn off the weather report altogether.
In MS Outlook, I cannot see all email messages I have received. Instead, I see a notification saying “There are more items in this folder on the server.”
This issue occurs because in some situations (when there is a lack of available disk space), only the most recent email messages are copied to the workplace. If you want to read older email messages, you can select the “Click here to view more on Microsoft Exchange” option.
My documents regularly open in “Read Only” mode, which is bothersome. Can I change that?
You can turn off the “Read Only” option by navigating to “File,” “Options,” “General” in Word and unchecking the box marked “Open email attachments and other uneditable files in reading view.”
What happened to Clip Organizer and Office Picture Manager?
Clip Organizer and Office Picture Manager have been removed from MS Office 2013 because Microsoft feels these applications are not stable enough.
Why do certain (very old) fonts no longer work in Word 2013?
This is because the way in which these fonts are generated is no longer supported.
Why do MS Office applications display “UT Werkplek x64” as user information?
When no information was entered as User Information in MS Office 2010, it is automatically added by MS Office 2013. You can easily change the user information under “File,” “Options,” “User settings.”
I think the MS Office 2013 theme is too boring. You can easily adjust the theme of the various MS Office 2013 applications to suit your own tastes.
You can do this under “File,” “Account,” “Office theme” and “Office background.” Unfortunately, you can only select the colours “white,” “light grey” and “dark grey” for the Office Theme, but the various Office Backgrounds are spectacular!
I can suddenly open and edit PDF files in Word.
That is correct. MS Office 2013 allows you to open and edit PDF files in Word, before saving them as PDF files again. Note that the layout may change slightly compared to the original PDF file, however.
I want to use British English instead of American English for my spelling check.
To change this option, go to “File,” “Options” in MS Word, select “Language,” “Add additional editing languages,” select “English (United Kingdom),” and click “Add.” You can also choose to set “English (United Kingdom)” as the standard language for spelling checks by selecting “English (United Kingdom)” and clicking “Set as Default”.
I do not have Dutch spelling checks or a Dutch version of MS Office 2013.
Sometimes, the automatic installation of the Dutch language pack is not completed correctly. You can install this pack yourself through ZEN. You can find the language pack under “UT-FLEX,” “Office.”
Some components of MS Office 2010 have not been removed from my workplace.
In certain cases, especially when MS Project 2010 or MS Visio 2010 were installed, some parts of MS Office 2010 may still be present after upgrading to MS Office 2013. You can uninstall these components through ZEN. To do so, go to “Workarounds,” “MS Office 2010 Uninstall” in ZEN.
Are MS Visio 2013 and MS Project 2013 still available?
MS Visio 2013 and MS Project 2013 will be made available at some point, although it is still unclear when that will happen.
