How can i upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10?
Please follow this manual.
What is better about Windows 10?
Microsoft has worked hard to make the current workplace more intuitive and secure. There is now a combination of the "outdated" start menu and the new Tiles. Each tile on your desktop represents an application. You can now also use apps that you get from the Windows Store, similar to Google Play or the Apple Store. In (UT) practice Windows 10 appears to be a solid and relatively fast operating system.
Is Windows 10 safer than Windows 7?
Yes and no. There were already possibilities to make Windows 7 relatively safe, but with Windows 10 this has been made easier. With the introduction of Windows 10 at the UT workstations, LISA will also introduce Bitlocker. With Bitlocker it is possible to encrypt the hard disk in such a way that it is impossible for an outsider to access the hard disk when the workplace is stolen or lost. You can find the manual for Bitlocker here: https://www.utwente.nl/nl/lisa/ict/handleidingen/ut-werkplek/bitlocker/bitlocker/
Where can I still install software for Windows 7?
Microsoft Software Center is not available on devices with Windows 7. UT-related software is available on the notebook service center site, Office365 for employees can be downloaded via portal.office.com.
Will there be a Windows 11?
No, there will be no Windows 11. On the other hand, roughly every six months a new version of Windows is released. Depending on the version, small and larger changes and improvements have been made. The Windows 10 version in two years will clearly look different from the Windows 10 version of three years ago.
Why can't I get Windows 10 on my computer, while my colleague can?
There are laptops and desktops that are too old to take full advantage of the security options that Windows 10 offers. These systems are eligible for replacement if possible.
What happens with the software already installed on my workstation?
Nothing, this software will stay available.
I am now the administrator of my workplace, what does this mean?
When you are an administrator, it means that you have all access rights to your workplace. The advantage of this is that you can install programs yourself. The disadvantage of this is that you can also accidentally delete files. You are also more susceptible to viruses and malware when you visit unsafe sites or install malicious programs.
When I want to open a URL, Microsoft Edge is started, where did Internet Explorer go?
With the release of Windows 10, Microsoft delivers a new browser called Microsoft Edge. Internet Explorer is still available under Windows 10. At this moment, Internet Explorer as a browser at the UT is preferred because the administrative applications handle this better.
To set Internet Explorer as the default browser, you can do the following:
o Start Internet Explorer. To start Internet Explorer click on the Windows flag at the bottom left of the screen, type "iexplore" and click "Internet Exploler"
o Click on the "cogwheel icon" at the top right
o Select "Internet Options"
o Select the tab "Programs" and click on "Make default".
Internet Explorer is now your default browser
When I want to open a pdf file Edge is started, where did Adobe Reader go?
With the release of Windows 10, PDF files are opened in Edge. For the time being, Edge is not yet a fully-fledged pdf-reader. You are advised to use Adobe Reader. This is supplied by LISA in the Microsoft Software Center environment. To make Adobe Reader the standard PDF reader, do the following:
o Click with your right mouse button on a pdf-file
o Click on "Properties"
o Click "Change" behind "Opens with"
o Select Adobe Acrobat Reader DC "and click on 'ok'.
Adobe Reader is now the standard program for reading pdf files.
I still want to use Edge, how do I import my favorites from Internet Explorer?
In Microsoft Edge, go to "settings" via the "three dots" at the top right, select "Import from another browser", choose Internet Explorer and finally click "Import". The favorites are now imported into Microsoft Edge.
What is the Windows Store? What are apps?
The Windows store is similar to Google Play or the Apple Store. You can download and install apps here, whether or not for a fee. These apps are integrated with the legacy applications within Windows 10. To install these apps, you do need your own (private) Windows Store account, just like your Apple-ID or Gmail account. Your login account for the domain will not work here.
How can I set the language of Windows 10?
The standard language with which Windows is set is English. If you want to set a different language, do the following:
o Click on the Windows flag at the bottom left of the screen
o Type "settings", click on "Settings"
o Select "Time & Language" in the "Windows Settings" screen
o Select your "Region & Language" on the left side of the screen, and choose "Add a language" on the right side of the screen
o Choose the language you want, click on "next" and finally "install"
Where did my Control Panel go?
With the introduction of Windows 10, Control Panel is "hidden". Microsoft wants to transfer the options in the Control Panel to "Settings", but not all options are ported.
To start Control Panel click on the Windows flag at the bottom left of the screen, type "Control". Control Panel is located at the top of the selection list. Click this and Control Panel will start.
What is Office 365?
Office 365 is similar to Microsoft Office 2013 or 2016. The appearance is almost identical to Office 2016. The big difference is that Office 365 is delivered via a portal on the Internet, while Microsoft Office 2016 as an installation package on a DVD or via Microsoft Software Center is supplied. The advantage of Office 365 is that it receives new features and updates much faster than Microsoft Office 2013/2016. Also at Office 365 no update is needed, as from Microsoft Office 2016 to 2019, it will remain 365. Click here for the Office 365 FAQ. NOTE: Office 365 is only available if you are employed by the UT.
Do I still get updates?
Unfortunately, you cannot escape this. To ensure that you work with the most secure workplace, Microsoft will still send monthly updates and install them on your workplace. The entire operating system will be updated every six months or so. Since modern computers no longer have a hard disk but an ssd (very fast storage) you will not notice this as a user. It is inevitable, however, to have to restart the workplace from time to time.
Do I need to reinstall my software?
Apart from Microsoft Office, you must indeed reinstall all software.
Which account do I have to log in with to get into Office365?
You log in to Office 365 with your UT email address.
After the migration, am I an administrator at my own workplace?
Yes, you are then an administrator. You can then install software that is not available in ZenWorks.
I have lost my specific connection to a Unix server. What to do now?
This can happen because in Windows 10 SMB 1.0 is disabled by default. Older Unix servers use this. You can re-enable SMB 1.0:
Start "Control Panel"
Select "Programs and Features"
Select "Turn Windows Features on or off"
Select In the list "SMB 1.0 / CIFS File Sharing Support"
tick "SMB1.0 / CIFS Client"
Click Ok, Ok
