General information
For several decades ITC has organised an annual Sports Day (afternoon, competitions start at 3.45 PM) for staff, their direct relatives and students. It encompasses a soccer, volleyball and Jeu de Boules competition and a running event and concludes with a cosy BBQ. In cooperation with Student Association ORBIT we organise also demonstration sports like Badminton and International Kids Games. Bring your family to this annual outing at the brink of summer.
Everyone (individual of a team sport, individual athlete, supporter/participant, participant in the BBQ) will have to (be) register(ed) individually. Family members are registered separately by their ITC relative using their UT email address. Team members have to register in person and include their team name at the appropriate question. Each registrant can select to participate in the BBQ or not, and whether this should be a meat (all Halal) or a vegetarian BBQ. The BBQ starts at the end of all competitions, around 6-6.30PM. A wide choice of meat and vegetarian alternatives will be available and prepared for you. Registrants will receive information on when and where to pick up their BBQ vouchers.
In case you want to change your registration, you can submit a new registration, which will override the old registration (or send an email with changes to j.p.g.bakx@utwente.nl).
Venue
Sport Centre UT Campus
The venue is only a 15-minute walk from the ITC building Langezijds.

Competition information
The following photographs are from earlier editions of the ITC Sports Day and from another venue (artificial soccer field). In 2026 we will use an artificial multi-sport field. You are advised to visit the venue yourself to get acquainted with the surface(s) to choose appropriate shoes.
Soccer
The game lasts 10-20 minutes. Teams shall have 4 players on the field, and 1 goalkeeper. Each team may substitute players freely. There will be no change of sides during the match. Teams are requested to provide one player as a referee to supervise matches when their team is not playing. Teams will receive a one-size-fits-all vest per match to be distinguishable from the other team, but it is recommended to design/bring your own team outfit. The surface is artificial grass for mixed sports.
- Each team that wins a match receives 3 points. The defeated team receives 0 points. If the score is equal at the time signal, both teams receive 1 point.
- There is no offside rule. At the start of the game and after every goal, a team starts with a kickoff from the center mark.
- Restarts occur by kickoff, free kick, goalkeeper throw-in, or dropped ball.
- Restart of the free kick: opposing players are at least 15 feet (4,75m)
- A goal may be scored directly from a kickoff or restart.
A foul occurs if a player:
- Holds, kicks, trips, charges etc. an opponent (direct contact)
- Handles the ball (except by the Goalkeeper within the approximate penalty area)
- Plays in a dangerous manner
- Slides, tackles
- Impedes the progress of an opponent (“obstruction”), or
- Prevents the Goalkeeper from releasing the ball from the hands
Ranking
With an equal number of points in the league standings, the following criteria apply:
- Number of competition points, if equal, then
- Goal difference (goals scored minus the number of goals conceded), if equal, then
- Mutual result, if equal then
- Number of goals scored
- Fewest # goals conceived in the match with the Champions
- Most # goals scored against the next-ranked opponent
Volleyball
Counting
We play a rally scoring system for 10 minutes (finals, 15 minutes). When the end signal is given, the point is played to the end. If, after that point, the teams’ scores differ by one point or less, the game continues until a 2-point difference is reached.
Rules
- In general, the official indoor volleyball rules apply.
- The first-named team plays to the left of the referee. No change of sides during the game.
- The first-named team starts to serve.
- 6 players on the field. Unlimited substitution allowed, as long as the ball is not in play.
Have fun!
Qualifications for the final
Each round robin (pool) game results in a winner. Wins are added up, and teams are ranked. If two teams have equal points, the winner of their direct competition is ranked higher. If several teams are ranked equally, the total score ratio determines the order.
The best two teams then play the final for 1st and 2nd place. The ranking of lower-ranked teams does not change.
Jeu de Boules
Rules
A team consists of two members. The objective is to throw/roll a metal ball as close as possible to a small target ball. The small target ball is first thrown by one team (alternating). Next, the members of the opposing teams throw their metal balls in a special alternating sequence as close as possible to the target. When all metal balls are thrown, scoring is decided. A point is scored by the team having at least one ball closest to the target. Each ball of the same team closer than the first ball of the opponent adds another point. A match is won after a certain time period (10-30 minutes). In case of an equal number of wins, the sum of points determines the ranking (a win gives positive points of the difference, a loss gives negative points difference).
In the event of disputes over the final ranking between two participating teams, the organizers may decide to hold a final throw-off in which ALL TEAMS participate. One member of each team can throw just 1 ball to a target, and the distance of each of the team's balls determines the ranking. This might lead to totally new rankings!!!! So count your blessings ;-)
Running
The 40-meter is organized on artificial grass. The start and finish are measured electronically. The track is open from 4PM - 5.15PM approximately. You can participate on the spot, without (pre)registration. Athletes can try to improve their best time as often as they like (but usually after 3 attempts, we see no improvements). The fastest 3 females, males, girls, and boys qualify for their finals. Finals are scheduled around 5.30 PM and determine the official 40m Sprint Champions.
The 1600m is organised at the end of most team competitions between 5.30 and 6 PM. Registration is open at the venue until 1 minute before the start. All participants (female, male, girls, and boys) will start simultaneously. If these 4 categories have multiple participants, rankings and prizes will be awarded per category.
BBQ
A BBQ is organised after all team competitions have finished, though we might start earlier to prevent long queues. You can register for the BBQ separately. The meat that is offered is Halal. In addition to BBQ ingredients, salads and French bread will be available. After payment of a small fee on the days before the Sports Day, you will receive tickets for a number of BBQ items like (vegetarian) sausage, chicken filet, and one consumption. At the venue, you submit your ticket to the dispenser to receive the item for the BBQ. Drinks can be bought at the bar.
Demonstration sport: Badminton, potentially cricket (2026)
Together with ORBIT, the ITC student association, we organise badminton fields with equipment. You can participate and play a game of badminton without prior registration. Just go to the fields and enjoy this sport. Since we have no control over the weather, you might be in for a challenging game if there is strong wind. ORBIT is also considering organising a Box Cricket demonstration. Learn the rules of the game, terminology, and try to hit a ball thrown at you by the bowler. Space is limited, thus hits should be controlled ;-)
International Kids Games
The PVI and student association ORBIT organise alternative international kids games like lemon spoon race, sack race/kangaroo, can toss game, koekhappen etc. Participation is open to everyone without registration. Although these activities are intended for children, adults are also stimulated to join and show their skills.
