ITC Sports Day 2026

The outlook for 2026's ITC Sports Day was positive with more than 100 participants registered, including many students and staff members and their families, and a much better weather forecast than the week before. Thus participants were advised to drink sufficiently and use sun cream because the relatively strong wind caused some wind chill, but at the beginning of July, the sun would have sufficient energy to cause a sunburn. That same wind, however, made playing badminton difficult, though some adventurous players tried it nevertheless. Across the mixed sports field at campus several sports and activities were set up with the help of ORBIT: badminton, cricket, kids' games, soccer, running and volleyball. Across the street, in a bit of an illustrious corner, the jeu de boule players gathered for their competition. Close to the bar, to their advantage.

Especially that relaxing yet potentially highly competitive Jeu de Boules saw many registrations, and the organization had to set up a system with 2 groups of 4 teams each. Although no official complaint was received from team Win-win, the Competition Director was approached by the president of the Uni to review the final ranking (according to The Tubantia Times). "Whether Les Petanquers are willing to return the trophy for the 3rd place, remains uncertain, " said Competition Director Jan de Kogel. "I have used all my titles and sent them a very strong request."

The other competitions went much more smoothly, thanks to unexpected but very welcome volunteers and players who served as referees. The volleyball and soccer competitions featured some highly interesting matches and professional play. After a motivational push, supporters enjoyed a game of cricket, jumped around like kangaroos in jute bags, and either played official badminton or used the court for footvolley. At around 6 PM, everyone gathered around the BBQs set up in the garden of the Stal. All in all, a fine closing of a wonderful afternoon. Have you not been there? Shame on you. Volleyball

Who could have predicted that the outcome of the first match already predicted the thriller final. Friends Plus and Pixel Smashers tied in their first competition, and by the end of all competitions, these two teams qualified for the final with the same number of wins and even some results that were suspiciously similar; they both beat Out of Office by 10 points. Out of Office seemed not only to be out of their offices but also literally out of bounds, losing all their matches. To prevent any advantage, it was decided to schedule the final for 2 x 10-minute periods, with a side swap. Until the final minute of the second period the teams were tied at 29 each. In the dying seconds of the match, the Pixel Smahers claimed the title. An example of the sometimes exemplary play is given below (same smash from 2 positions ;-).

Football

Football teams were asked to provide a referee but the orgaisation was very positively surprised to have a voluntary dedicated referee for all matches: Gabriel Parodi. It showed during the sometimes intense matches that an objective outside view was highly appreciated. The composition of most teams had changed since their initial registration, allowing for example the 10-year old Aron to play as well. The Geo Strikers won all their matches and thus rightfully won the football competition.

Running

40-meter sprint

The sprint lane was, at the beginning, fully occupied by the 3-year-old Davey, who challenged not only himself but also the timekeepers as he ran back and forth. As soon as a few more times are registered, more students and staff are motivated to attempt the 40-meter sprint. Only after Tobias Bakx, yep, the son of Wan, ran a blistering 5.19s some felt demotivated to try (again). Amongst the males, however, a tough competition emerged to qualify for the final. After Neele confirmed she was the best girl sprinter, and Aron got beaten by his mother in the mixed family final, Tobias, Avinash and Saurabh prepared themselves for their final. After "Go" Avinash reacted fastest and challenged Tobias. Only after some 20 meters Tobias caught up with Avinash, took the lead and crossed the finish line first. 

Special mention goes to Davey, who attempted the 40-meter sprint at least 6 (registered) times in the right direction and an equal number of attempts in the opposite direction.

1 Mile

Registration for the 1-mile was limited until minutes before the deadline. Finally 6 participants dared to take this challenge after having palyed games since 4 Pm and right before the tempting BBQ. Not all daredevils reached the finishline. But the 3 who did did make it an exciting event to watch. They were running close to each other during the 3 rounds. At approximately 250 meter before the finish line Rishav started to move away, almost assuming he victory would be his. Despite the dedication by Egor, who even returned to his office for special preparatory steps, had to give in. But Benson was still all in the game and approached Rishav rapidly. Both ended up sprinting to the finish line, with Rishav crossing first.

After this final competition, all participants could enjoy the BBQ at the Stall, exchange experiences and share their tall stories. The wonderful sports day would not have been possible without the support of all the volunteers from ORBIT, PVI and BHV.
