Resource security

Committed to safeguarding the vital resources of our environment

The world in which we live provides a fascinating palette of vital resources and services. How can people use these resources responsibly? ITC, as a knowledge partner, supports society in answering this question through scientific research and collaboration with geoinformation data providers and users.

Resource security is the linchpin of sustainable, reliable, and equitable access to essential natural resources. It aims to minimise the negative impacts of resource use while safeguarding supply for future generations. This delicate balance of availability, efficiency, resilience, and equity is crucial to prevent shortages, conflicts, and ecosystem degradation. In our modern era, we possess unprecedented knowledge about our planet and advanced technology to access the resources we need. However, responsible and sustainable resource management is imperative. Satellites equipped with sensors provide daily images of the Earth's status, encompassing the atmosphere, ecosystems, vegetation, freshwater, land and subsurface, oceans, and ice sheets. By analysing these data, alongside air- and UAV-borne data and ground-collected information, we can uncover the causes, effects, and interactions among resources, society, and our living environment. These insights are invaluable for making informed decisions about managing natural resources such as water, critical raw materials, food, and other services provided by the biosphere. The environment, in all its complexity, demands our careful stewardship to ensure a sustainable future.

The growing threat

Since 1800, the global population has increased eightfold, and per capita consumption of goods and energy has risen at least four-fold. This surge has led to resource scarcity, geopolitical competition, biodiversity loss, and regional pollution of water, soil, and air. Additionally, rising atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations have exacerbated these issues, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable resource management.

Our approach to resource security at ITC

At ITC, we leverage our expertise in remote sensing and geo-information for the sustainable use of resources. As an independent knowledge partner, we tackle scientific questions about the relationships among food, water, critical raw materials, energy, and biodiversity, and provide technological solutions to advance resource monitoring and management. We develop an understanding of the complete value chain: Where are resources located, how are they extracted or harvested and sustainably transported to users to optimise logistics and reduce losses. Through our international network, we strengthen society’s capacity to achieve sustainable resource use, at regional and global levels.

Making real impact

At ITC, our mission is to create real-world impact, primarily in the Global South. We enhance resource security through innovative research and solutions and are committed to Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy) and SDG 15. Our projects help monitor trends, track changes, and sustain diverse ecosystems and productive agriculture. RANGE

Funded by the Dutch Embassy in Kenya, this project aims to strengthen resilience in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) of Isiolo, Marsabit, and Samburu counties. Through interventions and capacity building, it seeks to improve rangeland management, sustainable production, government structures, and decision-making. The project combines local knowledge with earth observation and geospatial techniques, offering scholarships to local students and building partnerships with institutions.

Water hyacinth

Water hyacinth, an invasive species in (sub-)tropical inland waters, clogs waterways and affects aquatic life and human activities, in addition, it can facilitate the spread of diseases. Water hyacinth (WHY) can also be exploited to produce biofuels and other sources of income. A sustainable solution to water hyacinth encroachment "uses" WHY rather than just trying to "get rid of it". This project will use scientific research, satellite data and stakeholder experiences to co-create such solutions for Lake Chivero, the main source of drinking water for Harare, Zimbabwe's capital.

COMBINED

How do changes in biodiversity and climate affect each other in Dutch landscapes? That question is at the heart of the COMBINED project. In addition COMBINED will synthesize the effects of existing management measures and identify what barriers stand in the way of implementing successful measures. In this project, 24 Dutch societal organizations and knowledge institutes team up for six years.

LUISA

This research on Africa's land use intensification focuses on understanding its drivers and consequences, especially under climate change. Rapid changes necessitate novel approaches to assess Africa's potential, vulnerability, and resilience for sustainable, low-carbon, resource-efficient, and inclusive agriculture. The goal is to integrate modeling, satellite EO products, and socio-economic data to estimate Africa's agricultural resilience.
