Global South Perspectives on Well-Being and Lived Experience
On Monday, 6 July 2026, WISER Horizon will host an international webinar entitled “Global South Community Perspectives on Well-Being and Lived Experience.” This online event will bring together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and community representatives to discuss how well-being is shaped in disadvantaged communities across the Global South.
Understanding the Drivers of Well-Being
The session will present findings from WISER Horizon case studies conducted in Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, and Peru. These studies explore the non-economic drivers of well-being and examine what improves quality of life, for whom, where, and under which conditions.
Rather than focusing solely on income or economic growth, the research highlights the importance of factors such as:
- Access to water and sanitation
- Social capital and community networks
- Governance and local institutions
- Co-production between communities and stakeholders
- Placemaking and the quality of local environments
International Experts Share Local Experiences
The webinar features contributions from leading experts and practitioners working directly with communities across the Global South:
- Caroline Kabaria, Dennis Musyoka and Dancan Owaga (African Population and Health Research Center – APHRC, Kenya)
- Gail Anders and Michael Krause (Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading – VPUU NPC, South Africa)
- Michael Amponsah Nanor (Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana)
- Liliana Miranda Sara (Foro Ciudades para la Vida and IPCC Lead Author, Peru)
The session will be hosted by Julia Foellmer, Javier Martinez and Carmen Anthonj from the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) at the University of Twente.
Cross-Case Learning and Policy Impact
A key objective of the webinar is to facilitate cross-case learning between local partners, NGOs, researchers, policymakers and WISER stakeholders. Insights from the case studies will contribute to the development of the WISER Horizons Green Book, helping translate research findings into practical policy recommendations and broader societal impact.
The event will conclude with an interactive roundtable discussion moderated by Liliana Miranda Sara and Caroline Kabaria, focusing on lessons learned and opportunities for future collaboration.
