Research on Agroforestry Public Policies at the 8th European Agroforestry Conference (EURAF 2026)

Carolina Schiesari (ESALQ/USP) presented the extended abstract “Agroforestry Systems as a Climate Strategy: Evidence from Agrarian Reform Settlements in the State of São Paulo” at the 64th Congress of the Brazilian Society of Rural Economics, Administration and Sociology (SOBER), held jointly with the XVI World Congress of Rural Sociology (IRSA) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), in Porto Alegre, Brazil, from 19 to 23 July 2026. The study was developed in collaboration with Andre da Silva Mano, from the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), University of Twente.

The study evaluates agroforestry systems implemented in agrarian reform settlements in São Paulo State between 2010 and 2018 under the Sustainable Rural Development Project (PDRS). By combining remote sensing analysis with structured interviews with 59 beneficiary farmers, the research examines both environmental and socio-economic outcomes.

The work was presented within Working Group 4 – Environment, Agroecology, Sustainability and Climate Change, contributing to the broader debate on climate-resilient agriculture, public policy and the role of family farming in sustainable rural development. The research is part of the AFLORA – Agroforestry for Agrarian Reform project, funded by FAPESP (grant no. 2023/10133-0; 2024/07337-5; 2025/06046-0).
