Excellence: IBA STAR programme

From 2014-2015 onwards an excellence programme within the IBA programme is offered to 10% of the students, those who are ambitious and want to deeping their learning experience.

In the IBA STAR programme the participating students will be involved in different projects for the modules 3, 4, 5 and 6 (for cohorts 2014 to 2016 also module 2). The STAR-projects differ from the regular projects by the following learning ambitions:

Substantive learning goals

1.More in-depth literature, additional reading and discussions.

2.The level of understanding reached on the theories of the modules by discussions with experts and practitioners.

3.Application of the theories in more complex and more realistic situations.

Meta level learning goals

4.More research orientation, generation of new knowledge.

5.Business methods and leadership: decision making, planning, organizing, collaboration.

6.Reflective learning: philosophical, epistemological and ethical assumptions recognition and discussion.

7.Reasoning and structuring of thoughts in texts.

Each module may vary in terms of how much of these extra learning goals will be offered.

Participation based on selection

Participation in the STAR programme is possible by selection. Selection will be organised per module. Grades will be part of the selection criteria, but motivation and the shown (study) behaviour will be used for selection as well. The last means that students who are active participants in educational activities and bring added value to our programme are welcome to apply for the IBA STAR programme too. The module coordinators and teachers of previous module(s) will be consulted in selection decisions. The programme director of IBA will invite a selection of students to participate. Besides this students expecting to belong to the target group also have the option to apply by themselves for the STAR version of a module.

The motivation letter as selection means is complex both from the perspective of the teacher and the student. Some useful guides are given by The letter must use a professional business style, should be informative and free of spelling and language errors.


1.As a pre-condition for passing the STAR project of a module, the student must have passed the module.

2.The level of knowledge gained in the STAR project must be at least one level higher in Bloom's learning levels taxonomy than in the regular module. Bloom's taxonomy assumes the following levels: 1) Knowledge, 2) Understanding, 3) Application, 4) Analysis, 5) Synthesis, and 6) Evaluation. Because projects aim at application (as the minimum), the minimum level of understanding reached of the module's disciplinary knowledge must be Analysis, but more likely Synthesis and Evaluation will be aimed at.

Graduation with distinction

Students who successfully complete the STAR programme may be eligible for graduation with distinction as described in the IBA programme specific part of the Education and Examination Regulations (EER).
