The human mind is built to make quick-and-dirty decisions about the environment, including other people. This helps in surviving as a species, though it also subtly but steadily influences women’s careers. People notice only what they look for, and what confirms their expectations; they make decisions intuitively and adjust their arguments or criteria to fit these decisions. Through an intricate cycle of actual facts, unconscious beliefs and low or even negative expectations, powered by social interaction, the impact on careers is real. The workshop will offer insights in the relevant career processes, built upon recent instances of scientific research. The lecturer, Monic Lansu (MSc), is an expert in the psychology of social expectations, including gender bias.
