Despite a rather high and still increasing number of women among students and PhDs, women continue to be in a minority position among university teachers and researchers, and are under-represented at the top of the university. Especially in the field of science, technology and engineering. The number of female professors in the Netherlands (11 %) is one of the lowest in the European Union. This lecture addresses this issue by giving insight in the predominant way of recruiting and selecting academic personnel. In the Netherlands, the majority (64%) of newly appointed professors were recruited in closed procedures by scouts through their formal and informal networks. This efficient way of identifying academic talent however, has some serious gender consequences; it carries the chance that female talent is overlooked. This lecture gives insights in the academic culture of recruitment and selection, on scouting and scouts and the consequences of this system for women scientists.
Marieke van den Brink obtained a BA in Communication Studies and a MA in Organizational Anthropology at the Free University in Amsterdam (cum laude). In April 2009 she will defend her dissertation “Behind the Scenes of Science. Gender practices in recruitment and selection of professors in the Netherlands” at the Radboud University Nijmegen. Currently, she is working as a postdoc researcher at the Nijmegen School of Management.
