Lunch Lecture Val Jones, Wednesday October 10th

The Female Faculty Network Twente is inviting you to the postponed lunch lecture:

European funding under FP7 - some experiences in project acquisition

Dr Val Jones, EWI

On 10th October from 12.00 till 13.30 hrs. in building the Drienerburght

(the lecture will be from 12.00 till 12.45 hrs. and the lunch from 12.45 till 13.30 hrs. )

One of the skills that are crucial for a successful scientific career is the acquisition of projects. For this it is relevant to know what programmes are there, and what are the steps to take for project acquisition. The programmes are related to the specific research areas, but both, programmes and acquisition, contain a number of generic steps. Val Jones has here a lot of experience where we all can profit from if she shares it with us. Therefore we are happy that she agreed to our invitation to a lunch lecture.

Last year the European Commission launched its Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7). FP7 will run for seven years from 2007-2013 and is the European Union's main instrument for funding research in Europe. FP7 has a budget of 53.2 billion euros (roughly two and half times that of the FP6 budget).

The European framework programmes are a key source of external financing for universities. The framework programmes support international collaboration with external partners including industry and public sector organisations as well as other academic and research organisations. Whilst the competition for European funding grows fiercer every year, university researchers are increasingly under pressure to participate in and lead efforts to acquire European funded projects.

In this talk Val Jones introduces the major features of FP7, outline the process of project acquisition and share some of my experiences with project acquisition in this and previous framework programmes.

Val Jones has 28 years’ post-doctoral research experience in universities in the UK and the Netherlands (Newcastle Upon Tyne, Stirling, Aberdeen, Twente). She has been involved in European funded projects since 1989. Research experience spans several disciplines: Sociolinguistics and Computational Linguistics, Computer Science, Health Telematics and Health Services Research. Her Computer Science research background includes functional programming, formal methods, software engineering, knowledge based systems and telematics applications. She is currently a senior researcher at the University of Twente, where since 2000 her research has focused on mobile health applications (specifically health applications of Body Area Networks). She initiated the IST project MobiHealth in 2001 and was responsible, together with Dimitri Konstantas, for the scientific coordination of MobiHealth. Scientific publications include two books and over 100 other publications in Computer Science, Sociolinguistics, Classification Theory, Health Services Research and Health Telematics. Val Jones is co-chair of the Wellbeing_Services@Work community of the Ami@Work initiative from the New Working Environments Unit of the European Commission.

FFNT aims to support the professional development of women in academia and to provide a network for sharing and exchanging experience. It develops workshops and lectures specially for women and also organises activities aimed at women jointly with PA&O (whose activities are otherwise gender neutral).
