Jane in the academic jungle

For decades now, the Netherlands has one of the lowest percentages of female professors in Europe. Despite continuous efforts, there seems to be little progress. Recently, a vast body of research has acknowledged the fact that implicit gender bias play an important role. In her presentation, Marijtje will give an overview of how the proportion of female academics has developed over the past 15 years, not only with respect to full professorship, but for every academic function, from PhD students, postdocs, tenure track, assistant, associate and full professorship. For each of these functions, specific bottlenecks and threats seem to arise for especially female employers which will be discussed. Finally, she will explain the current opinion of the VAWO – the union for the Dutch academic community– with respect to gender diversity and the consecutive recommendations.
