Educating the professionals of the future in an international context. The UT stands for excellent research and education with a focus on technology and its role in society (High Tech Human Touch). To achieve our goals in education, we kept improving our bachelor educational model (TEM, i.e. Twente Educational Model) we invested in a growing number of English-taught bachelor’s programmes and facilities for our (international) students. (e.g. Global Lounge, housing)
We provide continuous learning pathways (Bachelor’s, Master’s, postgraduate) in each of these areas and offer students ample opportunity to contribute to their own training, development and learning experiences. We have therefore embraced blended learning, the combination of e-learning and personal education on campus as a community for academic and personal development.
At the University of Twente we strive to maintain an inclusive and positive learning and living environment in an international context. We recognize that studying abroad is a great opportunity for personal development and intercultural exchange. To promote these values we organize activities and offer services for our international students to help make Enschede their home away from home. Currently, we have over 2,600 international students from 79 different nationalities.
Academic bachelor's programmes at a research university last three years. Most people with a Bachelor of Science degree opt to continue their studies for one or two more years in order to become more proficient. They then become a Master of Science. The University of Twente strives to support students to finish their Bachelor's programme successfully within 4 years. In 2016, over 76 per cent of all Bachelor students achieved this.
In 2013, the University of Twente launched the Twente Educational Model for undergraduate education, a radically new educational model to meet the needs of today’s students, who are accustomed to new, rapid methods of learning, interacting and cooperating.
It offers a modular approach, stimulates students’ independent acquisition of knowledge and gives them more scope to pursue their interests. In this way, the Twente Educational Model places more emphasis on a profound and conceptual understanding of the heart of a discipline or domain, which is more important than factual knowledge of every single aspect of a given domain. The intensive study and regular feedback require a high level of student engagement. Training in collaborative work and presentation skills takes place ‘on the fly’. For instance, Electrical Engineering students at the end of their first year take part in a competition in which groups of students try to build the best-performing broadcast antenna.
To prepare for this challenge, they are offered some modules on the mathematics and physics involved. It is up to them, however, to acquire the specific information they need to build the antenna, within a fixed budget.
The education of the University of Twente is provided by the five faculties, offering 20 bachelor programmes and 34 master programmes:
- Behavioural, Management and Social sciences (BMS)
- Engineering Technology (ET)
- Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS)
- Science and Technology (S&T)
- Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC)
More detailed information on the bachelor programmes can be found on our Bachelor website.
More detailed information on our Master's programme's can be found on our Master's website.
At the University of Twente, students get the chance to come up with their own personal challenge and make dreams come true. Various student teams have been working fulltime in a project team during a full college year to work towards a goal. At this moment for instance, the Solar Team Twente is preparing their solar car to compete in the World Solar Challenge in Australia. Also, teams like RoboTeam Twente (robot football), Green Team Twente (hydroelectric car), Electric Superbike Twente and Solar Boat Twente are active.
Offering education is not a simple matter of offering a standardized programme to all. The University of Twente matches its offer to the needs and demands of today's student. An overview.
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE TWENTE
In 2013, the University of Twente launched a truly unique university college: University College Twente (ATLAS, Academy of Technology and Liberal Arts & Sciences). It targets talented individuals who refuse to accept inferior solutions to complex issues – ambitious students who want to broaden their skills so they can handle a high level of complexity.
TWENTE GRADUATE SCHOOL (TGS)
Twente Graduate School coordinates high-quality educational programmes based on topics closely related to the work of the university’s research institutes, taught and supervised by expert researchers. We offer structured PhD programmes for outstanding graduate students who are keen to pursue a career in scientific research. Next to the PhD research project leading to a dissertation, the equivalent of 30 European Credits in a broad variety of discipline related, academic skills and career development courses enable students to specialize in their research area they are interested in while broadening their perspective on the societal context of technology and research. www.utwente.nl/tgs
The Honours programmes of the University of Twente have a distinctive ‘high tech, human touch’ profile, and are aimed at highly talented, entrepreneurial and motivated students. For a full overview, please visit www.utwente.nl/honours.
PROFESSIONAL DOCTORATE IN ENGINEERING
The University of Twente offers Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) programmes in Civil Engineering, Energy & Process Technology, Healthcare Logistics, Maintenance and Robotics. PDEng trainees follow a two-year post-Master’s technological designer programme, where they learn how to design high level, creative and innovative solutions for complex issues with a multidisciplinary character. Consisting of an educational component at the university and a period of practical design work in industry, the programme combines academic research in an industrial context with taught modules in a range of related subjects. The number of PDEng programmes will be extended substantially in the near future. More information: www.utwente.nl/pdeng.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT
The University of Twente offers educational modules and full programmes for managers and professionals in areas such as Public Administration, Risk Management and Sustainable Innovation. The current programmes not only include part-time Master’s programmes but also in-company training, Master classes and short programmes in specific sectors. More information: www.utwente.nl/pld.
Pre-U: Pre-University programme
The University of Twente offers a range of unique educational experiences designed specifically for primary and secondary school pupils: Pre-U. These experiences give pupils the opportunity to explore some of the options offered at the university and to become familiar with scientific education and research. High school students can join our 1,5 year Pre-U Honoursprogramme, follow on of our masterclasses or come with their class for workshops or a lab experience.
Pro-U: Teacher Professionalization
Especially for teachers in primary and secondary education, the University of Twente offers a broad professionalization programme: Pro-U. We help teachers to develop themselves in the educational field by following workshops, join on of our courses, become part of a teacher development team or visit our teacher conference Twents Meesterschap.
In 2017, we also launched two new Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC’s), in addition to the successful MOOC’s on Ultrasound Imaging, E-health, Supply chain innovation and Geo-Health: Nanotechnology and Philosophy of Technology, which in total attracted 18,000 participants.
Five new TOP RATED PROGRAMMEs
For the master programme Geoinformation Science & Earth Observation, it is the fourth time in a row that it receives the quality seal 'Top rated programme'. The seal is awarded to all programmes with 75 point and above. The score for the geoinformation programme is 92, which is exceptionally high for a programme with over 200 students, CHOI stated. Also Applied Physics (80 points) and Chemical Engineering (78), it is a continuation of the quality seal. New seals were awarded to Applied Mathematics (84 points), Industrial Engineering & Management (80), Philosophy of Science & Technology (78), Educational Science & Technology (76) and Methodology and Statistics for the Behavioural, Biomedical and Social Sciences (75).
