Educating the professionals of the future in an international context. The UT stands for excellent research and education with a focus on technology and its role in society (High Tech Human Touch). To achieve our goals in education, we kept improving our bachelor educational model (TEM, i.e. Twente Educational Model) we invested in a growing number of English-taught bachelor’s programmes and facilities for our (international) students (e.g. Global Lounge, housing).

We provide continuous learning pathways (Bachelor’s, Master’s, postgraduate) in each of these areas and offer students ample opportunity to contribute to their own training, development and learning experiences. We have therefore embraced blended learning, the combination of e-learning and personal education on campus as a community for academic and personal development.

Academic bachelor's programmes at a research university last three years. Most people with a Bachelor of Science degree opt to continue their studies for one or two more years in order to become more proficient. They then become a Master of Science. The University of Twente strives to support students to finish their Bachelor's programme successfully within 4 years. In 2016, over 76 per cent of all Bachelor students achieved this.

Bachelor Performance

Twente Education Model

In 2013, the University of Twente launched the Twente Educational Model for undergraduate education, a radically new educational model to meet the needs of today’s students, who are accustomed to new, rapid methods of learning, interacting and cooperating.

It offers a modular approach, stimulates students’ independent acquisition of knowledge and gives them more scope to pursue their interests. In this way, the Twente Educational Model places more emphasis on a profound and conceptual understanding of the heart of a discipline or domain, which is more important than factual knowledge of every single aspect of a given domain. The intensive study and regular feedback require a high level of student engagement. Training in collaborative work and presentation skills takes place ‘on the fly’. For instance, Electrical Engineering students at the end of their first year take part in a competition in which groups of students try to build the best-performing broadcast antenna.

To prepare for this challenge, they are offered some modules on the mathematics and physics involved. It is up to them, however, to acquire the specific information they need to build the antenna, within a fixed budget.

The education of the University of Twente is provided by the five faculties, offering 20 bachelor programmes and 34 master programmes:

  • Behavioural, Management and Social sciences (BMS)
  • Engineering Technology (ET)
  • Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS)
  • Science and Technology (ST)
  • Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC)

Student teams

At the University of Twente, students get the chance to come up with their own personal challenge and make dreams come true. Various student teams have been working fulltime in a project team during a full college year to work towards a goal. Also, teams like RoboTeam Twente (robot football), Green Team Twente (hydroelectric car), Aerobotic Tech Team Twente, Electric Superbike Twente, Solar Boat Twente and, since 2020, eSports Team Twente are active.

Educational approach

Offering education is not a simple matter of offering a standardized programme to all. The University of Twente matches its offer to the needs and demands of today's student.

In 2013, the University of Twente launched a truly unique university college: University College Twente (ATLAS, Academy of Technology and Liberal Arts & Sciences). It targets talented individuals who refuse to accept inferior solutions to complex issues – ambitious students who want to broaden their skills so they can handle a high level of complexity.

Twente Graduate School coordinates high-quality educational programmes based on topics closely related to the work of the university’s research institutes, taught and supervised by expert researchers. We offer structured PhD programmes for outstanding graduate students who are keen to pursue a career in scientific research. Next to the PhD research project leading to a dissertation, the equivalent of 30 European Credits in a broad variety of discipline-related, academic skills and career development courses enable students to specialize in their research area they are interested in while broadening their perspective on the societal context of technology and research.

The Honours programmes of the University of Twente have a distinctive ‘high tech, human touch’ profile, and are aimed at highly talented, entrepreneurial and motivated students. For a full overview, please visit

The University of Twente offers Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) programmes in Civil Engineering, Energy & Process Technology, Healthcare Logistics, Maintenance and Robotics. PDEng trainees follow a two-year post-Master’s technological designer programme, where they learn how to design high level, creative and innovative solutions for complex issues with a multidisciplinary character. Consisting of an educational component at the university and a period of practical design work in the industry, the programme combines academic research in an industrial context with taught modules in a range of related subjects. The number of PDEng programmes will be extended substantially in the near future. More information:

The University of Twente offers educational modules and full programmes for managers and professionals in areas such as Public Administration, Risk Management and Sustainable Innovation. The current programmes not only include part-time Master’s programmes but also in-company training, Masterclasses and short programmes in specific sectors. More information:

Pre-U: Pre-University programme

The University of Twente offers a range of unique educational experiences designed specifically for primary and secondary school pupils: Pre-U. These experiences give pupils the opportunity to explore some of the options offered at the university and to become familiar with scientific education and research. High school students can join our 1,5 year Pre-U Honours programme, follow on of our masterclasses or come with their class for workshops or lab experience.

Pro-U: Teacher Professionalization

Especially for teachers in primary and secondary education, the University of Twente offers a broad professionalization programme: Pro-U. We help teachers to develop themselves in the educational field by following workshops, join one of our courses, become part of a teacher development team or visit our teacher conference Twents Meesterschap.

In addition to the bachelor’s and master’s programmes, the programmes of excellence and the post graduate education, the university of twente offers a selection of massive open online courses (MOOC's) in various exciting fields of expertise.

These free courses - open to everyone - combine high-level video lectures with self-study, assignments and online interaction. Joining forces with UK-based FutureLearn, we've designed them to make learning an enjoyable, social experience.

keuzegids: Four TOP RATED master PROGRAMMEs

In 2020, Keuzegids no longer awarded Top rated programmes, a quality seal that is being awarded to master programmes with a score of 75 or above. The number of Top rated programmes in 2019 is four. The master programme Geo-Information Science & Earth Observation rates the highest: the score of 92 makes the programme the (shared) number two of all university master programmes in the Netherlands. It is the fifth time in a row the seal has been awarded to the programme. The two-year research master Methodology and Statistics for the Behavioural, Biomedical and Social Sciences, that is offered together with the University of Utrecht and the UMC medical center, improved her score by ten to 8 points. It is the second Top rated programme seal in a row. Applied Mathematics en Industrial Engineering and Management also received their first quality seal last year and were able to continue their status.
