Sloppy science - Fiddling with science Lecture

The lines between real and fake are becoming increasingly blurred. This applies to scientific knowledge as well. Fortunately, most people still rely on the academic world as an independent source of facts and hypotheses. However, malicious individuals and mechanisms are eroding this status: unreliable publications in dubious journals or AI-generated results from obscure universities. But it is also closer to home: academics who cherry-pick from their measurement results and integrity rules that are not being upheld. In short, scientific fraud is everywhere and becoming increasingly insidious. Award-winning science journalist Stan van Pelt provides examples of this malpractice and thrilling exposés. He wrote about it in Sloppy Science (2025).

Stan van Pelt is a science and research journalist. He writes for various newspapers and magazines on biomedical and natural science topics, and also covers developments in the fields of scientific integrity and science policy.

For a report on the battle for scientific grants, he won a Gouden Beitel, the annual publication prize of the Association for Science Journalism (VWN), and came third in the European Science Journalist of the Year award.

Van Pelt studied biology in Nijmegen and obtained a PhD in neuroscience.
