The Netherlands is comfortably situated, at least for now. That's because the Gulf Stream transports heat to our cool regions. However, this current is beginning to slow down and may even come to a standstill in 2060. Climate scientist Dr René van Westen (UU) is an expert in the field of AMOC (Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation) and explains how global warming is causing the circulation to decrease. Prof Dr Suzanne Hulscher, professor of hydraulic engineering and management (UT) and WRR council member and chair of the climate policy project, explains the potential impact of an AMOC standstill on our weather, coastline and rivers. How can we prepare for such a major and uncertain climate change?
