The Century of Women Lecture

Home, hearth and kitchen: that was the woman’s domain! Or at least, that was the norm for a very long time. It was not until 1922, for example, that Dutch women were able to vote. But after that, women’s lives in the Netherlands changed dramatically. In her book De omwenteling of de eeuw van de vrouw (2022), bestselling author Suzanna Jansen describes the past century from the perspective of women. Drawing on personal stories from her own family history, she reveals the roots of the gender relations that still underpin our society and which sometimes resurface. Consider, for instance, the trend to banish women back into the home. Jansen has written a large number of award-winning books, such as Het pauperparadijs (2008).
