Workshop Science Meets Practice

Is your research relevant for, or are you interested in, addressing water challenges in close collaboration with practice?

Then you are invited to participate in a “Science Meets Practice” workshop. This workshop is initiated in the context of a Knowledge-in-action project, launched by UT's Climate Centre and funded by Climate Initiative Netherlands (KIN) called “Networking and learning for transitioning towards a drought resilient region: a transdisciplinary reflection-for-action approach”.

One of the projects’ ambitions is to equip young researchers with knowledge broker skills. For that we are organizing two workshops. The first one took place on 15 October 2025 and provided an academic perspective on the role and position of (young) researchers. This second one, which takes place on Thursday, 11 December 2025, is organized in close collaboration with practitioners. The workshop consists of different parts for which you can register separately. The interactive part starts at 8:45hrs. The last part of the workshop, 11:15hrs until 12:00hrs is dedicated to sharing key findings with a larger audience. Lunch will be served between 12:00hrs and 13:00hrs.

As we need to reserve lunch and the maximum number of participants for interactive part of the workshop is 20 people, we kindly request that you register before 4 December.

About the workshop

This second workshop is organized by Prof. Dr. Ir. Joanne Vinke-de Kruijf and Stefan Nijwening, innovation manager at regional water authority Vechtstromen. Building on the results of the first workshop, we will jointly reflect on questions such as:

  • What do interactions between science and practice look like in reality?
  • What is for practitioners the added value of interacting with researchers? And the other way around: for researchers to interact with practitioners?
  • What working methods support fruitful interactions between science and practice?

The organizers will provide practical examples and stimulate exchange of experiences. Additionally, researchers will do small group work with a practitioner focusing on a practical case. The last part of the workshop is reserved for identifying and sharing lessons learned with a wider audience.

The workshop is open to young researchers of the University of Twente and, especially the last part, also to collaborating researchers and partners. The workshop takes place at the University of Twente. As the first interactive part of the workshop will build on some of the things that were discussed during the first workshop, participants who could not attend last time will be asked to have a look at the materials of the previous workshop.
