#MeToo in Academia - A code of conduct on academic integrity: lunch discussion with Wiendelt Steenbergen

The last months, we have seen a worldwide #MeToo discussion on unwanted and uninvited attentions and intimidations, often with a sexual connation. The discussion initiated by activists and picked up by the entertainment industry has moved and united various groups across many industries. Joining the #MeToo campaign, politicians, domestic workers, ICT workers, journalists, athletes, actresses and actors are sharing their stories of sexual abuse and calling for change. However, #MeToo has already received a fair share of criticism, from trivializing sexual abuse to complaint about social media, which is that it’s all talk and no action. Also at the UT, the topic has been discussed in the context of academia.

FFNT would like to continue this discussion within the full UT community, with a series of lunch discussions dedicated to #MeToo in Academia. The meetings are open for everyone from the UT community interested in the topic, both employees and students.

Wiendelt Steenbergen obtained a Master degree in Aerospace Engineering at the Delft University of Technology (1988), a PhD degree in fluid dynamics at the Eindhoven University of Technology (1995) and joined the University of Twente, Enschede (the Netherlands). In 2000 he was appointed assistant professor in biomedical optics. In 2010 he became full professor and group leader of the Biomedical Photonic Imaging group of the University of Twente. Since September 2017 he is vice-dean research of the Faculty of Science and Technology.

His current research interests are speckle based imaging of tissue perfusion, e.g. for monitoring burns, diabetic foot ulcers and skin diseases, photoacoustic imaging for mammography and rheumatology, quantification of photoacoustic imaging using acousto-optics, novel strategies for noninvasive cancer treatments, and the use of light for noninvasive in ovo sexing of chicken embryos.

Wiendelt writes columns in the U-Today Science and Technology Magazine and regularly expresses his opinions on www.utoday.nl/what-u-think . In a recent contribution he briefly introduced an internal code of conduct recently developed in his group. The code covers topics such as sexual harassment, intimidation and discrimination, but also academic integrity and working with humans and animals. As an introduction to the lunch discussion he will briefly present the code of conduct, how is was developed, and how it is implemented in his group.
