SUMMARY:FUSE Enschede on August 27
DESCRIPTION:On August 27\, FUSE Enschede brings founders\, investors\, and
decision-makers into one charged space where ideas don’t just meet. They
start to move\, connect\, and evolve. It’s not about scale. It’s abou
t intensity. The right people\, brought close enough to spark friction\, e
 nergy\, and reaction.

SUMMARY:Sloppy science - Fiddling with science
DESCRIPTION:The lines between real and fake are becoming increasingly blurr
ed. This applies to scientific knowledge as well. Fortunately\, most peopl
e still rely on the academic world as an independent source of facts and h
ypotheses. However\, malicious individuals and mechanisms are eroding this
status: unreliable publications in dubious journals or AI-generated resul
ts from obscure universities. But it is also closer to home: academics who
cherry-pick from their measurement results and integrity rules that are n
ot being upheld. In short\, scientific fraud is everywhere and becoming in
creasingly insidious. Award-winning science journalist Stan van Pelt provi
des examples of this malpractice and thrilling exposés. He wrote about it
  in Sloppy Science (2025).

DESCRIPTION:Our world today is plagued by numerous wars and conflicts. How
can these be understood\, and more importantly: be resolved and prevented?
PAX is a Dutch organization trying to end armed conflict and building inc

SUMMARY:Founding Father of ASML – Martin van den Brink
DESCRIPTION:After finishing his study Applied Physics at the University of
Twente Martin van den Brink joined ASML from the beginning. Van den Brink
played a key role in driving ASML’s technology and innovation success.
Among many other achievements Van den Brink invented the Mask-to-Wafer a

ranks to become Chief Technology Officer and President\, and in the proces

SUMMARY:Grid congestion – when will the fuses blow?
DESCRIPTION:New residential areas\, data centres and large companies all re
quire a lot of power sockets. Demand for electricity and grid capacity is
rising rapidly\, whilst the infrastructure is lagging behind and energy su

DESCRIPTION:From the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge to high-speed rail\
, megaprojects capture the imagination but they also bring immense risks\,

can we learn from them? Dr. Mazen Wahbeh\, structural and civil engineer\,

SUMMARY:Ready for a disaster: preparedness or paranoia?
DESCRIPTION:The Netherlands could wake up tomorrow to find itself under wat

the border. The government advises us to put together an emergency kit an
d get to know our neighbours. Three days of self-sufficiency\, and then th
e worst should be over. But what if a crisis lasts for weeks? How quickly
will the certainties on which our society relies – such as electricity\,
food\, order and trust – disappear? Prof. dr. Mariëlle Stoelinga (UT\,
EEMCS)\, an expert in the field of critical high-tech infrastructure\, an

SUMMARY:Eat yourself healthy and smart!
DESCRIPTION:Proteins are banned\, fats are in the bin\, carbohydrates are o
ut… It’s hard to keep up with all the trends about what constitutes a
healthy diet. Toon Scheurink MSc\, neuroscientist at UMCG\, focuses on wha
t is good for our gut and our brain. The brain and gut communicate with ea
ch other via the gut-brain axis. Through a direct neural pathway and our i
mmune system\, there is a constant interaction: the gut is thought to play
a role in brain disorders such as Parkinson’s or schizophrenia. We can
positively influence our brain through certain foods. Fatty acids from nut
s\, oily fish and avocado are excellent. Proteins\, vitamins and plenty of

SUMMARY:How can the Ministry of Defence become more effective?
DESCRIPTION:Things are in quite the state on the global political stage. Wa
rs and conflicts between countries\, ethnic groups\, political leaders…
everything seems to be in a constant state of flux. For the Ministry of De
fence\, this means it must adapt more quickly to the current situation. Ho
w do you transform such a cumbersome organisation – comparable to the Un
iversity of Twente – into one that can operate more swiftly and is more
‘warfighting capable’? Different ways of working and decision-making s
eem logical\, but what about different weapons\, a more rapid collaboratio
n within NATO\, or a greater emphasis on cybersecurity? And what does this

SUMMARY:Staying mentally sound in a crazy world
DESCRIPTION:The idea that we must be increasingly happy and increasingly su

‘become the best version of yourself’\, there is always something to b

SUMMARY:High Tech\, Human Touch: intimacy with robots
DESCRIPTION:Everyone experiences touch differently. Does it make a differen

robot. The philosophical implications are fascinating. After all\, when a
robot replaces a human being\, is there still such a thing as genuine cont
act? Don’t you get an unrealistic image of the perfect body or the ideal
friendship? Two PhD students from the University of Twente\, Marie-Laure

SUMMARY:The Century of Women
DESCRIPTION:Home\, hearth and kitchen: that was the woman’s domain! Or at
least\, that was the norm for a very long time. It was not until 1922\, f
or example\, that Dutch women were able to vote. But after that\, women’
