TURBULENCE AROUND SCOUR HOLES IN SHARP BENDS
In sharp bends of the Mahakam River in Indonesia, many deep and relative stable scour holes were found. However, we cannot explain their origin and stability yet. An important step in improving our understanding of the processes related to scour holes in sharp bends, may be a study about the dominant hydrodynamic processes in this area. We used collected data around a scour hole in a sharp bend of the Mahakam River to study the behavior of accelerations, pressure gradients and turbulent stress gradients in the scour hole. The results revealed a dominance of the non-hydrostatic pressure and the turbulent stresses in the scour hole.
