Recent years have witnessed an explosion of free and open source systems, software, databases, and tools for managing water information. These developments, combined with major governmental open access initiatives and plunging prices for water data sensors and data loggers have created exciting opportunities for water scientists and managers to push data-driven modeling and information analysis to new levels. This presentation will explore new directions for open access web based data sharing, analysis, and modelling with focus on the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences (CUAHSI) Water Data Center (WDC), HydroShare, and Tethys Platform. The WDC is a new U.S. National Science Foundation-funded resource for storing and cataloging hydrologic time series data using Open Geospatial Consortium (WGC) standards. The WDC Data Client (http://data.cuahsi.org) provides open access to over 100 curated data services shared via WaterML -- including many global datasets. A companion to the WDC is HydroShare (http://www.hydroshare.org), which serves as a "YouTube for water data" providing free data storage and publishing services to the water community with focus on spatial data, temporal data, models, scripts, and related digital resources. Data in HydroShare are described through extensive Dublin Core metadata and are published with Digital Object Identifiers (DOI's) to enable citation. Both the WDC and HydroShare make extensive use of the new open source Tethys Platform for building and deploying web based apps (http://www.tethysplatform.org). Tethys Platform allows scientists and engineers to build apps using the widely used Python programming language combined with popular open source libraries. A brief discussion and live demonstrations of each system will be presented.
Dr. Daniel P. Ames (Dan) is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah where he leads the Hydroinformatics Lab which focuses on open source software and system for water data management and modelling. Dan is the Editor-in-Chief of the highly ranked journal, Environmental Modelling & Software and the new open access journal, Open Water. He will be visiting Enschede as part of an annual study abroad trip with a group of BYU engineering students.
