Abstract for the presentation:

I will present some of my PhD work on extremely deep scours (up to 60 m) observed in 33 sharp meander bends of the Mahakam River, Indonesia. Detailed flow measurements, in combination with a state-of-the-art flow model show the importance of non-hydrostatic pressure in creating these scours. I will end the talk showing current efforts to explain plunging flows observed in sharp bends, deep bedrock canyons and near engineering structures.
