Existing studies show that there is a correlation between the intensity of turbulence near the bed and the erosion of sediment. This study focuses on characterizing the turbulence measured in the large-scale experiments of Joep van der Zanden. During these experiments the velocity was measured under plunging breaking waves along a breaker bar. By characterizing the turbulence relevant information was obtained. For future studies the obtained information in combination with information about the sediment transport, it is possible to determine what kind of relationship there is between the presence of turbulence and sediment transport under plunging breaking waves.
