Dr. Bie was born and raised along the Yangtze River, the third longest river in the world. From 1999 to 2003 he did his B.Eng. in Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University, Beijing. After that he started his PhD at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), where he received his doctorate in January 2008 with a thesis on dynamic traffic management. Since February 2008 Dr. Bie has been working as an assistant professor at the Centre for Transport Studies. In this capacity he has been involved in various projects on intelligent transport systems, traffic flow modelling, and traffic safety.
In his spare time, Dr. Bie enjoys reading (fiction and poetry), music (baroque), and travelling. He also enjoys tennis (mainly watching), swimming (all four styles), and distance walking (having done the Nijmeegse Vierdaagse).
